This is a good topic. First of all, you need to conduct your market research and ensure that you're pursuing a profitable market, that you can adequately serve that market, and that you can differentiate from your competitors. You need to make sure that your product is better than your competitors or offer more value. Next, you need to setup an efficient online store for your inventory. If you have software problems or something stops working on your site, then this can be a big problem as you could lose sales. Finally, you need to be able to drive traffic to your website. SEO, Social Media, and affiliate marketing are some of the best venues. You'll want to utilize all the methods possible for getting visitors to your website.

eCommerce is the art of buying and selling items, services or goods online. Successful ecommerce businesspeople adhere to a few simple rules. They find something to sell. Then they figure out where to sell it. They have a mechanism to let purchasers remunerate them for anything sold. They create professional email addresses for effective communication with strangers and use effective promotional materials to grow their businesses. This method can be learned, followed and emulated

    1
Find a product to sell. Are you a crafter? Can you create beautiful jewelry that your friends marvel over? Are you someone who haunts the garage sales always finding the perfect bargain? Do you know someone in the wholesale business? Do you draw or write, or cook fabulous meals or know how to fix your grandmother's computer? Then you've found your niche.

    2
Find a market. Are you content to work for someone else? Or would you rather own your own business and be your own boss? If you like to work for someone else, consider selling items on eBay or Etsy. eBay is the world's largest ecommerce website. Thousands of items are bought and sold each day by retailers around the world. Etsy is a website specializing in offering items from crafters.

    3
Create your own website and sell your product. Website hosting can be free or prepaid. Free website hosting may be fine for the short term. However, many free websites have advertising on their sites. This can draw attention away from your business and make you look unprofessional. You may wish to pay a minimal fee (typically $10 a month) to host your own web page free of anything other than your business.

    4
Accept payment. Paying for goods and services online is not as difficult as it used to be, thanks to PayPal. PayPal is a website that allows buyers and sellers to instantaneously transfer funds between accounts safely. A buyer can send a secure payment via his credit card online. A seller can accept the payment. Withdrawing funds incurs a small fee. However, PayPal is accepted worldwide and thus allows businesses to tap into many otherwise unreachable markets.

    5
Contact sellers. Successful ecommerce sellers use a variety of methods to allow others to contact them. A personal 800 number can be set up with most phone companies at minimal cost. Many sellers prefer email whenever possible. An email address is an important part of the information your business conveys to the rest of the world. Choosing one that sends the right message is ideal. Avoid addresses that send a frivolous, sexual or unsavory connotation to clients. Email addresses that work fine for a Facebook account may be completely wrong for your business. You also want an email account with good security features. Gmail (the email address service offered by Google) is an excellent choice. Many websites hosting services will also offer users personalized email addresses, another good option.

    6
Promote your business to help it grow and expand. If potential clients don't know you exist, they cannot buy from you. Sites such as eBay and Etsy will automatically bring up items when searched in their databases. Sellers can pay additional money to have their sites listed first when searched. If you have your own website, you can submit it to Google and other search engines for a free listing. Site owners can also promote their businesses in other ways. These include creating free newsletters, holding promotional contests, offering to list someone else's website in return for a listing on your own and writing a blog.

I want to add to #2

    TEST YOUR MARKET.

Run a series of advertisements for $50-500 for 1-4 weeks and drive people to a one page website that states a solution to a problem they have.

If you offer a cool gift in exchange for their email you can find the demand for the products and build a database (which is EVERYTHING online).

Once you've  tested you can make the decision whether or not to continue.

I made the mistake of not doing this with my first business selling fountain pens online.

For an example of the one page website  click on my signature.  At the moment, it's not as sexy as I want it to be and the copy isn't great but it still converts.

Getting your visitors back to your website can be main prospective of eCommerce website. Think of the way what things you are offering with the products which are available on other online store like you. If you are selling the products with the same price and services than the other eCommerce websites which have good reputation than yours, users wouldn't see any benefits buying products from your website.

The second thing, you have to implement a way for your visitors to stay in touch with you and must keep them informed about special discounts, coupon codes or listing of new products through different communication media like Newsletter or email marketing.

To run a successful Ecommerce business, you must be willing and able to wear many hats. This is not a small undertaking -- at least if you intend to be successful. In a mature company, each business solution listed below could be a department unto itself. If you cannot afford to delegate responsibility for any of these key areas, you will just have to do it all yourself, at least until you can afford to hire someone to help you.

Firstly, it’s a great initiative and a rewarding prospect, as well. An e-commerce business is surely a trend of today, but you must focus on designing and developing a website for promoting your business on a global platform. Having an online presence is a must need in today’s age. To design a website, you can either follow the custom design and development process or look up to open source applications like Magento.
A number of e-commerce website development service providers can help you in the process of designing and developing the e-commerce website. You can drop a mail on this regard: sales (at) infoway (dot) com
