| Description: | Back in the late 90`s a male friend of mine came to me looking for help. He confided that his wife was always angry and she would scream, throw things at him and physical attacked him in front of the children. She controlled the money i.e. his paycheck, and gave him a weekly allowance of$5. He thought of leaving but he had no money and no where to go. Also, they had two young children and he worried that if he left she would hold true to her threats of making sure he never saw them again. I felt compelled to help this young man and his children so I did some research and what I discovered shocked me. Studies indicate that abused men make up between 15% to 35% of all domestic abuse victims annually yet there are little to no services in place to help them to escape the violence. In the USA we have over 2000 traditional i.e. for abused women, domestic violence shelter programs, but few if any will assist a male victim and his children. Many won`t even allow an abused women to bring an adolescent son into shelter with them. Our agency specializes in offering supportive services to men in relationships with abusive women. Although we specialize in that area our supportive services are inclusive, we assist anyone in need of help. The agency is run virtually, we train advocates online to work on our toll free helpline and keep everyone in the agency connected via email, group lists, chats and teleconference. We also work on bringing more public awareness to this much ignored social problem. |
