I would say X and Y, the Baby Boomers` kids, are now the focus because they entering their spending years. Not so much that they are any harder to market too, it is just they have their own generational profile and the marketing focus is moving from the Boomers to the where the next generation of spenders will be found. Any time we have to change things we feel it is harder...

All kidding aside, I don`t understand the point of this poll.

Today`s markets are all about niches. A business owner targets a specific niche, which may or may not have to do with generations. Some niche markets may span generations which can present certain marketing challenges, however the characteristics of such a niche are most likely to defy those generational differences. If a product serves customers of several generations, then the marketing probably doesn`t resolve much around age.

For example, my poster art. I market to people looking for art, primarily the tourist markets in specific places of which I capture in a poster. I`ve sold the same posters to college students all the way up to senior citizens. My marketing has nothing to do with generational differences, rather solving the "problem" of blank walls. So does one generation pose a greater challenge over another? No. Age is irrelevant to my niche.

I agree with you Steve. And the older our population becomes the bigger the entire market will be. I don`t think customer demographics for marketing and generations are the same from a marketing point of view. For example, I do many things that is done mostly be younger people, like training for a Triathlon. If someone uses generation as marketing demographics they would miss me. I don’t run into many my age doing this but they are out there. But yet our social economic group does buy a lot of stuff for this when we are involved. I think the population is too diverse and global in nature to use a given generation as marketing demographics.

I disagree with you, CampSteve, to a certain extent. You may very well sell your product to college students and senior citizens, BUT I don`t see how you would market your product to both groups at the same time.

The purpose of the poll was geared toward Generation Y, because they are quite a different breed. Some of the best places to reach these people are on MySpace, Facebook, campuses, etc. If you only market your product using one method, you are most definitely losing a vast amount of potential customers.

bert: I agree that specific demographics are far more important than generations; however, I truly believe the differences between the Boomers and Gen Y are significant (and they are two very large groups).

Adam, I understand your point. Age demographics can be important to many businesses. For those, then yes, finding age specific places are a great way to market a product! However, I will argue that MOST products aren`t generational and that happens to be my own experience.

BUT I don`t see how you would market your product to both groups at the same time.

I in fact CAN market to multiple age groups at the same time. I sell my posters in stores and online for people looking for art and a nostalgic reminder of a specific place. I market through these venues (and elsewhere) and places like MySpace or Facebook are not where I will find my niche customers, regardless of the fact that some college students purchase my work.

Some products simply defy age and for those businesses, platforms that cater to specific age groups are generally not the place to market.

I would like to add that I think that age is the different from generational demographics. I think age is more relevant too. Each generation goes through changes in buying habits as they age. We all like to think our generation does things differently, but I don`t know how many times I say, "I am getting more like my father every day"...

One can market to more than one generation. Beauty products can be marketed to a two or three generations, you just use different techniques. The trick for me is that my stuff is 100% Organic, 95% Vegan and is all over $6.00. I have to get to the right income and philosophy group. The generation doesn`t matter in the case of beauty products necessarily.

I think the point Steve is making is to question whether "generation" is the key factor in marketing---the single most important and overriding selector when marketing a product.

One might ask, for example, if hair color is the key selector. Yes, if the product is a hair-coloring formula. But is hair color the single most important selector when selling popcorn?

In the same way, is a birth-date-range the single most important selector for a product? It would have to be a product that`s directly and explictily age-related, and that age would have to be bracketed.

As for the psychological, philosophic, and moral differences between the generations, there does appear to be some significant information from polls and evidence as the generations come together in the workplace. Once again, it isn`t their age that`s the key selector, though; it`s the common upbringing associated with their growing-up period.

Silent generation is the pre-World War II folks (Really old) Gen Y`s are all about technology, being hip and instant gratification. Given them the latest product to envy and they`ll buy in.

I agree with using different techniques. Sometimes you should market differently. As in, makeup. The same makeup can be marketed in different ways, that each generation will benefit from it most. I think you can market products to all generations, but, would you benefit more if you learn the most effective way, to market to each?

I just look for people with teeth. :):) Of course, I`m just kidding.

As a Gen Y myself, I am quite amused by what other generations think of us.

Personally, I avoid MySpace and Facebook like the plague. My husband and I feel that there is way too many viruses that are embedded in the "cool videos" that the pages are linking to. Of course, most of my friends are stalking each other on MySpace. We forbid them from using our computers.... lol. A lot of the cool factor in MySpace and Facebook is the fact that someone can publish a website about themselves, which can be just as easily done by blogging.

I also find technology comments amusing. 20 years ago, answering machines were the latest rage and they were so awesome because you could have a tape recorder answer your phone. Now the latest rage is text messaging, because I can contact my friends while I`m in public without anyone hearing my conversation (among other benefits). I think every generation is into technology. It is just that as time goes on, new things are invented, and new people are born to appreciate them.

Then again, I`m not your typical 20 something. My passion is dying fabric. I recently joined a group in my area that meets to discuss fiber art, and most of the members are already retired, and some are getting close to that point. As a 20 something, it is difficult to relate to such women, because my mother didn`t teach me how to sew, and I still have to hold down a full time job to support myself until I can get my biz off the ground... which is a catch 22 in a lot of ways.
