I think the most important thing is to have someone on the ground that you trust. Countries like Ghana are trying to build business in their country and are offering dual citizenship to people who do. Kenya has removed its custom duty on computers to promote computer imports in the country. Taxes on goods are standard and custom duty plays a part in how much you pay.
Cost to operate in the foreign country is MUCH less than it is here so you pay people more than what the average person is making there, but less than what you would pay here (1 Kenyan shilling (100 cents) is equal to $72).
Because you are exporting American goods you are helping build the American economy and the Import Export Bank of America (can`t remember the formal name) is VERY interested in promoting the export of American goods. They help you with information, feasibility studies and more. I will post the correct name and the website in a bit!
I wanted to share this email thread with everyone.

Hey Blu,
I love your comment about outsourcing. I don`t know if it`s realistic, but sounds SO cool. It could be a new "Made it the Great USA" campaign where we could sell products in Walmarts in China, Indonesia, Taiwan, etc...
Now if we could just figure out how to make just about EVERYTHING for pennies a week, I think we could have something here. Do you have any small children you could donate for labor?? j/k

I think it is realistic. The trick is to set up the company in the U.S. and then set up satellite companies in the remote countries that offer the services back to the U.S. You maintain control from the U.S. and that gives you some protection from potentially corrupt governments. Thanks for the email.
Blu
Sounds like a good way to make money, but doesn`t sound a lot different than what many corporations are already doing. What would make this company any different or have it`s own niche??
By the way, I`m just playing devil`s advocate here and not meaning to insult your idea.

Hey, I am an entrepreneur so I must be thick skinned
!
The thing is, everyone assumes that the big corporations are already doing it, but they aren`t. They are looking for cheap countries in countries abroad that could provide cheap labor. Why can`t it be an American country with a satellite office abroad that they keep staffed with local people from there that speak English WELL?? I know that there is 1 data center in Africa that is even worth talking about and it is based in Ghana. They are giving some of the other countries a run for their money, and they speak French and English, allowing for one data center to handle two of the clients from different parts of the world. Handy!!
Anyone with any ideas buzzing in their heads? The third world IS the final frontier, and it is beginning to grow. Europeans and the Chinese and Japanese are there en masse right now trying to secure their position. Why should we be left behind?
Blu,
I`ve been running an international distribution channel that is growing every couple of months. I would definately agree with your post about finding someone you can trust. I had the opportunity to work with my distributors for 6 years in a different capacity before I approached them to become a distributor for my company. You need to do your homework before doing anything with a company. Get references, find out who other companies are doing business with, use current partners to recommend other potential partners.
I`ve had a couple of experiences where I went with a distributor contrary to the recommendation from current distributors. I ended up cancelling the contract as they were destroying the market in that country.
I don`t have any experience in the retail world, but I believe the same concepts apply.
