Do you need to know someone to get funded? Does cold calling work?

Any suggestions?

In my opinion, it is always best that you and your business is referred to a prospective investor by someone they value and trust. Anything can happen and I am sure it has. But this would make things easier.

Getting funded takes more than "knowing someone" and the importance varies somewhat with each specific situation. (amount needed, stage of development, industry, etc)

However, from our experience and that of our clients - the vast majority of equity funding comes from those within two (or three) degrees of separation. That is people you know or ones they know.

For the average person - that represents between 10,000 and 50,000 folks, depending upon whose figures you use for average.
