a question of what to do.
for 35 yrs ive been in mid level retail supermarket management, first running my families 3 stores for 22 yrs and now for a large supermarket in fl. For 35 yrs ive hated it but its what i was born into.,Its what i know.Ive tried several forrays into small bz ownership on the side over the years with limited success. At this stage in life i`m dead tired of working for someone else, but dont know what type of business to go into. All the experts say go with what your passion is, well my passions are scuba diving ,travel and politics and helping people solve problems, how do you turn those into a money making business?

this may sound a bit put offish, it is not intended that way. there have been at least 10 threads with this subject in the last year or so. several many, many pages deep. have you had the chance to peruse those?

Coming up with business ideas seems to be a big problem with a lot of entrepreneur hopefuls. There are indeed a ton of posts on this subject.

In my opinion, I don`t think that you necessarily have to pursue what your passion is, but rather pursue what type of work you enjoy doing. There might be no demand or money to be made in the industry where your passion lies. I think it is more important to pursue modeling business operations in a way where you would enjoy working on it every day.

For example, you may LOVE Scuba diving, but opening up a Scuba retail store is probably the last thing you would want to do. However, maybe starting a blog on scuba diving, or opening up an online store or even scuba diving lessons might be better ideas. More than where your passion lies, you should pursue the type of work that you would enjoy doing the most.

There are two basic pathways involved in starting a business, particularly in the current economic stagnation. Finding your passion is a long-term strategic path. Doing what you know is the short-term.

You may hate retail management, but the fact is that retail and sales are a massive part of any economy. It`s a huge part of ecommerce, and you have a lot of background and experience.

One reason you`ve hated it may be that you felt "forced" to do it, working for someone else. But if you`re building your own business, for yourself you may not be as down on it.

The point being that you should consider getting up and running, fairly quickly, to get into business. To do that, you`ll be better off if you already know a whole lot about the steps and principles.

AFTER you have a going concern, you can then look at your passions and work out a way to develop them into a consolidated new business that gives you the best of both worlds. But that will take money. With money being problematic, if you can self-finance you`ll be in a good situation.

Or you could set up diving trips for politicians to vacation spots around the world.

I think it`s best to design your lifestyle first and than, a business that will fit and fund the lifestyle you have designed.

Where do you want to be geographically...? are you there already or maybe you want to pack everyone u p and move to some mountain top? will your new lifestyle be something complicated and require lots of money to fund or, will it be something more laid back and stress free?

Now that you have a firm idea in your head and what it`s going to cost you to pull it off you can start thinking about what it is that will pay for it.

I`d think after your 35 year imprisonment and tortured work experience you should not be thinking of a business to get into until you`ve had a few weeks or months or years (whatever it takes)  to spend in the mts or wherever you can find solace and just get your head together...

once that is done, you will be surprised at the opportunities that will open up to you automatically... You won`t have to question "what should i do" but more "which opportunity should i take".?

35 years is an incredibly long time to have been stuck in a job you hate... you need to go on a vision quest. ASAP!

Hello fjnike-

If you like scuba diving, why not open a school for first time learners or get connected with a resort at a vacation hotspot and teach scuba year round. What about a book? "Scuba Diving made easy" - learn in five easy lessons. Or what about a publication or newlsetter that lists the best places in the world to scuba dive, keep it updated and advertise your business in there as well.

I am actually coming out with a book in March 2009 called "The Babay Boomers Guide to Small Business Success" that lists many businesses based on current trends taking shape in the 21 century. Email me at unvunh123@yahoo.com or dvbvalpha1@comcastnet and I will send you out a sample of the book at no charge!
