Just learned about EveryBlock, is a new way to keep track of what’s happening on your block, in your neighborhood and all over. You can choose your city and get a citywide overview of news by category. I might never eat in my own neighborhood again given the amount of violations reported….

The site is one of the experiments I like to refer to as the “inverted news paper” - citizen journalism at its most raw. Every day, a wealth of local information is created — officials inspect restaurants, journalists cover fires and Web users post photographs — but who has time to sort through all of that? EveryBlock aims to collect all of the news and civic goings-on that have happened recently in your city, and make it simple for you to keep track of news in particular areas. They’re a geographic filter — a “news feed” for your neighborhood, or, yes, even your block.

If your business is local and serving the public, check out how you are being discussed in your communuty.

The noise can really get in your way if you don’t get in front of it. We have been trying to execute on this every week by giving people updates prior to the changes actual release. It relieves tension and it permits people to plan for the next change.

The trade off can be a week delay of the execution of the change but the benefits outweigh the cost.

Work can be fun! How many times have you tried to get people enthusiastic about their job? We are in the midst of moving from a small office to a much larger space. In this new space the management team will have small offices. Each member was asked to choose a theme for their office based on their childhood hero. We are going to paint one color wall in each office based upon their hero and then add posters and themed trinkits to the office(i.e. James Bond, Speedracer, The Hulk etc.). Every member of the team is extremely enthusiastic about “telling” their story through these images. This has been one of the most positive personalizations of the work environment that I have ever been involved in. If you’ve tried something like this please share.

I’m sorry it’s been so long since I last wrote. The last few weeks have been filled with market turmoil and internal growth struggles. As the Presidential race heats up it appears as though the markets will take their time recovering. The crash of ‘08 will be felt for a long time. Frankly, I have been hearing a lot about changing life styles since everyones 401K is worth 40% less. It’s amazing how bloated our life styles can get and what we really need. Since I can’t say, “this is what we did through the last recession”, I can only say don’t listen to the noise and cut back as much as possible to make ends meet. Get rid of as much debt as possible and put your cash in a safe place i.e. a bank or Gov’t bonds. In regard to the growth pains, I am continuously amazed at how some space between management and sales can help grow your revenue stream. When we were very small, about 10 people, we micro managed every aspect of the sales process. Maybe it helped us understand our clients better and helped refine the sales process quickly but it sure hampered their performance. At this time, we are finding better success allowing leaders to emerge and push each other on the sales floor. Since the motivation is coming from within the sales team it’s much more effective. It’s evident that the team feels more empowered to achieve their goals and when the goals are achieved they are more proud of themselves that they accomplished it.

I’ve been appearing here and there on The Big Idea with Donny recently. Thought you might get a kick out of how the show comes together and the role of so-called experts (yours truly included) who are invited on the show.

Below are the emailed questions I received from the producers in advance of my most recent appearance. They take this and turn it into what’s called a “rundown”, which is essentially an outline of the show with talking points, many of which end up on the teleprompter. I figured the process, as well as the actual advice, might be illuminating for you. Enjoy!

For those of you who run a business or are trying to get one off the ground, I bet you’ve had a run-in or two with a crisis of some kind.

It may have taken the shape of a loss of data, or a short-fall in needed cash. Perhaps it was a lawsuit or a personal medical situation. Who knows - it could’ve been an unexpected tax hit or maybe even a key customer pulling back from a large order that you’d considered “in the bag”.

We had our own crisis last month when this website was attacked and disrupted by a “hacker-bot”, a new term for me and one I’ll always wince at when I hear it in techie conversations.

This coming week I’m going back on CNBC’s The Big Idea to discuss how to deal with crises like those mentioned above. I’m wondering if any among you would like to be featured on the program to ask your burning question about how to deal with a crisis you’re experiencing. The show will air next week on Tuesday, barring any pre-emption.

So, anyone dealing with a crisis at their business? Been through one recently and want to avoid similar situations in the future? Please share your comments below and/or volunteer to be considered for the show by satellite uplink from your town’s local TV station.

If preferred, as an alternative, you can use this link to contact me, too.

As you start your new business you need to think about your health insurance and its costs. If you have left an employer that offered you health insurance then you will be offered COBRA. Typically, COBRA can range between 102%-150% of the cost of the group health insurance. If you are healthy, the best thing to do is purchase individual health insurance as soon as posible but not temporary insurance. Temporary health insurance can cover that employment gap when you are going from one employer to another but it has a limited time period 30days to 6 months and a low benefit amount. Rather, you shoud purchase individual health insurance that will save you thousands of dollars compared to COBRA. In addition, once you are approved for individual health insurance you can’t get “fired” by the carrier as long as you pay your premiums. Even if you think your new company is going to offer health insurance a Health Reimburement Arrangement (HRA) would be the best way to take advantage of the lower cost individual health plans while receiving a tax benefit of group insurance. Also, your premiums can’t increase if you get sick while being insured. The carrier can only raise your premiums based on the people in your age range, sex and zip code.

Many self-employed individuals need to purchase their own health insurance policies, long before strategizing about their startup’s approach. When you are newly self-employed and looking to purchase, here are some quick tips:

-Always compare multiple policies and prices. Don’t just look at insurance companies that “your parents recommend.” The market is incredibly competitive, so you never know what plan may be best for your needs and budget.

-Understand what’s covered and what’s not. It is important to know that office visits and other “assumed” benefits will be included. Make a list of what is important to you (vision, dental?). There are over 300 competitive plans in this market alone.

-Clearly understand the confusing “buzz words” of each potential policy. Make a detailed list of each policy – what is your co-pay, deductible, co-insurance and monthly premium?

-Know the details. Does your plan include a health savings account? Which doctors and hospitals accept your coverage?
