Here is how one book I read broke up number 1 (getting to know your customers better)

Either you have:

1) The Corporate Commitment: more relevant in big companies. This usually happens when a company has messed up badly and needed to know their customers better

2) Customer Get Together: this is a regular get together with customers and talk informally. Remember think date (fun), not lab rats (focus groups).

3) Open line communication: The key is to get customers to speak up with an incentive. No I'm not going to fill out your 50 question survey, I don't want to work for free. 

4) Technology: this one is really simple. Just don't fall in love with technology.</description>
