Sourcing from China is a complicated issue - where lowest price is not always the best. Companies need to weigh the added inventory and the impact this will have to their cash flow and to their customer service.

Most small business technologies are not capable of weighing this decision. One solution that is particularily well suited is Phitch. Phitch works with QuickBooks to factor in actual lead times to set inventory levels at peak financial performance.

Phitch has a great tool to compare suppliers from an economic value added standpoint - in other words in compares the cost and cash impacts to guide source of supply decisions.

Phitch provides big company results on a small company budget.

Kairee, thanks for your comments.
Here is my take on India, and any Middle East countries from a production stand point. Here are some reasons that I would not do any production from that part of the world:
1) Travel to the country is intensive, long and takes 24 hrs, usually. It is not a journey that can happen last minute in case of a production issue, like you can with China or elsewhere.
2) Safety Issues. I like to travel to China because I feel safer than I would feel traveling alone to India.
3) Turbulent and unpredictable inner country unrest.
4) Equality for woman.
5) Quality and lack of accessibility to qualified factories.
6) Managing the import logistics are more complicated, and time consuming. There are a lot of barriers a (i.e. canals) that you have to navigate through to get to the USA. These kinds of issues adds freight costs, are labor intensive, all of which cut into shrinking retail margins already.
7) Delivery time frames for resale are another issue that is hard to manage when you need to turn goods quicker. It is hard to sell inventory when it only hits the USA every 90-120 days, and most companies cannot afford to carry large domestic inventories that last awhile. The China 30-45 days is easier to work with.
There are pro's and con's in every country; you just need to be educated on their policies of export and go somewhere you feel comfortable traveling to alone. It is a good idea, and highly recommended, to have a well versed agent to handle the business for you.
