that is AWESOME and exactly the kind of example I'm looking for!!! what a great thing to do - some questions:
- what was the initial responses from folks when you offered this option to them?
- what (in general) are the most important charitable organizations people are thinking about right now?

You mention a desire for a positive marketing impact. Are you also participating in local civic councils and organizations? That is how I’ve seen models like yours really get exposure and shine. Eventually those people, based on their own and their company’s reputation, get invitations to sit on boards and have even greater impact.

Do you have a plan in place for you and your top level execs to serve on boards in your local communities?

Great post! I started a program at my business brokerage this year that I would like to share and encourage other commission-based professionals to consider. Here's what I do: I pledge to give 5% of my commissions earned to one of three non-profits that I select. On my listing agreements I allow my clients to select which of the three they would like a portion of the commission from their deal to go to. This creates more awareness for the non-profits by my clients. I also hope that it will have a positive marketing effect. If one of the executives with one of the non-profits knows of a small to mid-size business owner who may be considering a sale they are more inclined to refer them to my company since it could result in a decent donation for the non-profit. If I selected only one non-profit to support there would be less incentive for people committed to the non-profit to make referrals because they would receive a donation regardless. A business priced at $5 million is a pretty small business, yet if such a business were referred to me and I succeed at selling it, one of the non-profits will receive nearly $18k.
