Google Enters The Chrome Wars

Hi gang,

Well, Google pulled off another surprise yesterday and announced that they have been working on a web browser, named Chrome.  They made the beta available for download to the general public and within 1 day, Google has 1% of the browser market!

There are a ton of possibilites here for Chrome to integrate into all of Google’s web apps and move us all towards complete web based computing.

By the way, as a tech geek,  I find it really interesting that 20 years ago, everything was Mainframe - meaning central servers did all the work and your computer was dumber than a box of rocks.  Then we had the PC revolution, or decentralized computing - your computer got real smart and servers weren’t needed as much.   And now, 20 years later,  the web has come along and we will soon be WebFrame computing again.

But I digress…

So here’s the link to download Chrome.  Give it a shot and let me know what you think of it.

I’m trying Chrome and I don’t see any real benefit nor do I understand why someone like myself who is happy with Firefox, would switch.

I’m always up for trying a new browser, so I downloaded Chrome as soon as it was available. But alas, no matter how many I try (Chrome, Firefox, Safari), none compare to Opera! (http://www.opera.com).

    Jonathan,
I think that Google’s attempt with Chrome was to knock Internet Explorer out of the Market. I downloaded Chrome the first day it was released, and trust me I haven’t opened FireFox at all.

Coming from the tech world [web designer] The reason why I enjoy using Chrome is because it doesn’t have all the menus on top. I get more visibility space Plus the features that it offers are not compared to what Internet Explorer offers.

The Tabs are awesome… The other browsers feel too cluttered to me. Not to mention the search capability no need for a secondary seach box on top, simply enter your search term into the address bar and Google pulls the top index web sites.

I don’t know how much you’ve used Chrome, but here is one of my favorite features..
the Inspector - open a new page: right click on it and click on inspector. You can see all of your pages coding elements… Though, they still give you source view…
There are other handy tools that developers can use to assure they are creating standardized pages…

    BrianOK,
Chrome does have some components similar to Opera. Which is why I stuck to it.. It’s almost at if they took the best from Internet Explorer [not], Mozilla, Safari, and Opera and bundled it into one user friendly browser.

I just hope they didn’t bring in the 3-pixel jog to the right, bug from Internet Explorer…
Hopefully, Chrome will give Designers the ability to code without having to create a separate CSS file just for Chrome.
So far, I like what I see and hope that they don’t start getting over creative and become another IE downfall.

Heads up to everyone: Firefox has had a google search in the address bar whenever your words don’t match a URL pattern too. This has been the case for some years now.

  6. Robert Says:

    It’s fast. That’s a pretty good feature.

As a huge fan of Google, I have to say that I love Chrome! I love all the features that Edgar mentioned but what I like best, is that every time you open a new tab, that tab runs in it’s own environment.

What that means is, if I open a tab and for whatever reason something causes the loading site to freeze up, then I don’t have to close the entire browser, just the tab that has locked up.

So far I am not impressed. The shortcuts I have created from Chrome do not load and it does not like Yahoo Mail at all. I hope it will improve with updates, because I do like some of the features such as the opening page showing you the sites you last visited but so far clicking on those does not always activate the URL.So still using IE7 mainly.
