Dropped Cell Phone Call

          0 votes

We had a great radio show this weekend filled with coaching and stories from callers about their exploits and efforts…

Toward the end of the show a guy named Ryan called in. He had been waiting a while on his cell phone to be brought on the air.

When we went live with him, he explained that he’s expanding his business from Nantucket to a new location in Aspen, CO. Nice choice of locations, Ryan!

In any event, he explained that he was driving through western Pennsylvania at the time. We were doing our usual back and forth between brothers, having fun, basically talking over the caller (sorry for that, Ryan!!!).

We finally realized that and that’s when we said, "OK, Ryan the floor is yours! Ask your question!"

His question sounded something like, "Wa- bri- n- … and als- -an te- me …" and then a dial tone. He had travelled into a bad cell and we had lost him. He waited patiently only to get cut off by bad cellular circumstance.

Ryan, if you’re out there, we’re sorry, man! Good luck in Aspen!

I am working on an idea for an improvement of a product already on the market. After speaking with a patent agent. I realize a patent can be costly. Should a inventor spend the funds to acquire a patent even before pursuing the logistics of developing the idea? This includes researching companies who could manufacture or speaking to a technical illustrator who can make the specs you need to manufacture. Is the actual patent the only way to secure one’s idea?

    allan,

your question regarding patents is one that is often asked. Should you spend money protecting your idea before you’re sure you will be able to commercialize the product?

well, the answer is that you will have a very difficult time creating an attractive licensing arrangement with a company to commercialize your product idea without a patent.

so, we’d recommend that you at least do a patent search and then file a relatively inexpensive [link=http://www.startupnation.com/pages/start/Step5.asp' target='_blank']provisional patent application[/link]. this will give you a year’s worth of time to prove to yourself that there’s real commercial merit and opportunity with the product. within that year at any time you can step up to a formal patent application. and that’s what licensees will typically want to see.
