Hi I have a couple of questions. I live in Las Vegas and I'm a bartender.

I wanted to be a non-profit organization....It seems really hard to achieve the 501c(3) status. I really don't care about getting the tax-exempt status because it would cost me wayy too much money.

  • Can I have the word "foundation" in a for-profit business?
  • Can I be a for-profit foundation (like google.org) and give away all my money that I earn during these parties to a charity?
  • Can I be a non-profit foundation but not be 501c(3)/tax-exempt)?

People think I'm crazy. I want to show everyone that I'm the coolest bartender in town. I'm here to help everyone else. Please answer my questions so I can continue on with my quest. :)

First of all, there are a number of categories by which one can attain "tax exempt" status with the IRS. The 501 c(3) category gets a closer examination before qualifying because it allows the entity to accept donations which can be tax deductible for the giver.

You should consider what type of entity will best fit your purposes and goals.

Tax exempt entities cannot be "owned" and therefore cannot sell equity.

Alright, getting "tax-exempt" status is out of the question. I don't even care about getting that. I want to be a non-profit organization though. I can be a non-profit and yet be non-tax-exempt anyway right? Ah :(

Foundation is not a good idea for a profit oriented business... Its a different domain I have to say... But good luck

I think it would be best to start at the beginning-

What are your reasons for wanting to create a "non-profit organization"?
