The Landscape of the Internet Today

An aspect that many people don’t consider is the impact that the internet has on the environment.

Landscape of the Internet: How busy can “one second” online be?

The Internet is growing day by day. Every second online is packed with information and activity. Have you ever pondered the massive amounts of data that is being processed online in any one moment? Ever wanted to know exactly what the internet does in one split second? This infographic from Irish Telecom outlines the amazing landscape of the internet of today, and highlights just how busy one second online can be.

As a start-up business, the internet is a valuable asset and gaining a better understanding of the power of this resource is valuable. In just one second there are over 2 million emails sent, 8 thousand tweets tweeted and 55 thousand Facebook likes made. It is incomprehensible to image that in a single second 1600 skype calls are made, 90 thousand YouTube videos are viewed and a staggering 24,765 GB of Internet traffic is used.

An aspect that many people don’t consider is the impact that the internet has on the environment. It is rarely the case that someone browsing the web on their smartphone will consider the data centres and infrastructures in place in order for a single Google query to process. For anyone interested, a single Google query uses 1,000 computers in 0.2 seconds to retrieve an answer. Every query has to travel on average 1,500 miles to a data centre and back to return the answer to the user. The extensive infrastructure needed to maintain the internet as we now see it, emits 20 milligrams of CO2 emissions entering the atmosphere EVERY SECOND from Internet usage!
