I have to agree with the original post.  Almost every site catering to aspiring entrepreneurs is focused on "small business" or even "home-based business".

Well there you go. It would seem the majority of would be business owners are not interested in a major undertaking.

You should check out the site www.smarterleap.com.  They provide ideas for new startups that aim to be much larger than your typical small biz.

Jeff, your website is an idea bank? So you sell business ideas? I would tend to believe if somebody has to buy an idea rather than create their own, that is not the type of business owner Byrne was referring to.

Not that every business owner needs to create an original idea, not at all. But it's one thing to buy a franchise for example and quite another to buy just an idea.

Perhaps, I misunderstood Byrne's comments.  From my research, there are many people that want to start a business, but do not have a viable idea.  The goal of SmarterLeap is simply to provide these aspiring entrepreneurs with a novel concept that they can call their own.  It costs only $9/month to get access to the idea bank.

Interestingly, the concepts come from other entrepreneurs and creative thinkers that are willing to share their ideas.  Many of the ideas are captured on the site www.ideaarchitectsonline.com

To me small is a limiting factor. Entrepreneurs should always shoot for the stars. That's where all the fun is.

I agree, although it makes sense to start small.  In many ways it is about picking an idea that has a high ceiling vs. choosing a business with limited revenue potential.  Sometimes you don't know this going in, but many times you do.

I do understand your point. If you want to dream, dream big. But people tend to hesitate, when there is money involve. It doesnt always follow, that if you invest big time, you will harvest big as well. I think people want to limit the risk to very minimal, thus starting small, and eventually expand...

For a lot of people, "shooting for the stars" doesn't have anything to do with the eventual size of the business or the paycheck.  I chose to start a small business because I don't ever want to work for a big one, ever, even if I own it.

The real fun of small businesses is that you get the chance to create something completely new.  Big businesses typically tweak old ideas (five blades to a razor instead of three, make the car bigger, make the screen bigger) whereas small backyard inventors create the real paradigm shifts (the first car, airplane, or personal computer).

 Beautifully put.

It's the spirit of small business ownership that built this country and the same spirit that most entrepreneurs embrace. We can't all hit it big and we don't all strive to hit it big. If everyone had the goal of building mega corporations who would start the next neighborhood deli or corner bookstore or pizza joint? Diversity...

This is really true. Also not every one can scale the height of mountain. Not every one have big dreams and big risk taking appetite. There fore most of the people settle for small business.

I think a lot of people, me included would just like to do our own thing (lifestyle freedom), as we provide a decent living for ourselves.

I also think, that we are the ones who will tend to create some of the big winners, purely out of our passion for our independence, especially when some of those ideas align with emerging markets that are hungry for solutions (like the ones that we provide effectively ).

We probably think small is good, because many of us believe that we can accomplish creating and successfully running a small business, but doubt our abilities to go big.

Personally, I am constantly torn between the deep seated (human spirit) desire to go BIG, and the much simpler, Let me just quietly do well enough to provide adequately for my family and live the life I desire that's free of any boss.

I think the real key, is aligning our individual gifts and passions to a business that suits as many of those talents and skills as possible. That would allow us to at least have fun as we stay small or go big !

Just thinking out loud.
