I have to say that the use of twitter really depends on what your goal is for using twitter.  If you simply have an online store then probably not the best way to use your time.

I couldn`t disagree more. If you have an online store, you are limited only by your imagination. Twitter has an estimated 10 million users. How is that a bad thing?

A very interesting article.  It`s really hard to tell small business owners why they should be using Twitter because a lot of them come back at you with these 4 points.  Especially the points about "what can you say in 140 characters?" and "it takes too much time".  My personal opinion is that I think Twitter is a phase and I`d be surprised if it stays around for long.

My take on this is even if it`s a phase or fad and it may well be, it won`t bust for awhile yet, so take advantage of it (see my previous posts)

You can`t beat free with a stick. and BTW if you do end up "getting" twitter, you can say a lot in LESS than 140 characters and I for one have learned much from following others that are in the top of my industry(s) that point out relevant things to read and stay on top of that I may have otherwise missed or would have taken me hours or more to find.

Even if you just use twitter as a news source and a source of new information it can be worthwhile for you. If you feel that it is no use to you in marketing then so be it.

In terms of too much time, what is your time worth and what is the potential ROI? This is a free marketing tool vs spending money on paid advertising, be it print or online. free is free.

Twitter is a phase? Are you kidding?

All I know is that in the 3 weeks I`ve been using Twitter, I`ve increased my affiliate sales and my traffic. I`ve made invaluable business contacts and a few friends. Even if you believe Twitter is just a phase, (though it`s clearly not) why not take advantage of its estimated 10 million users?

Really, you can use Twitter anyway you like. You can use it to build a mailing list. - to announce specials or discounts - to take surveys - to announce new blog posts. Brick and mortar stores can use it to take orders like one coffee shop is doing. Authors can use it to post book excerpts. I`ll be using it to announce the launch of my new website.

I could go on and on and on. The point is you are limited only by your imagination.

Twitter works well for my business. I`ve rec`d great information, links and met some pretty darn interesting folks! A client or two has surfaced utilizing twitter so I can`t complain. It`s fast, easy to locate, pinpoint and focus on your niche markets. I`ve reached far more people with twitter conversations than with other social networking.  I guess it`s all about what works for you.

I will read your article after I post this:

I think many people are on twitter for different reasons. First let me agree with you, twitter can waste your time in life and I see how it does for many.  Literally there are people on their all day and night like a chat session and I honestly can`t see how they get anything else done.
