Great Post and FANTASTIC responses!!

After several decades (not giving away my age here     )    of working long hours with little reward (either praise, acknowledgment, or financial except from one employer) I decided to venture out on my own. The hours are still long, the rewards adequate, but the sense of accomplishment is incrediable. My success is MY success, My customers are my customers, MY failures are my failures, and the most beautiful thing is that when I am done with this, my kids will have something for their future (besides a few pennies that I may have in pocket).

I have in the past worked for 2 completely different business owners (one valued equipment more then ANYTHING else, including customers or employees, and the other put employees and customers before all else) and I will always be thankful for the later, as he to this day teaches me that the way to success is with great employees and happy customers. And Happy employees will generate great customers.

This post has reminded of the past and refocused the future for me. For me the true goal is not financial, but in knowing that I have done it right without taking advantage of my employees or customers.

Thanks again to all

Dennis,

Learning from your former bosses is so crucial.  I had a really bad boss once.  He chewed people out in front of other employees.  I vowed to never do that if I were in his position.  I`d rather give a person their dignity, even if they screwed up.

Scott,

I have always been and always will be a strong believer of the principles of "One-Minute Management". I feel that corrective issues are more apt to be resolved if the conversation also involves what an employee does right. So often supervisors focus only on the negative and the positives are completely over-looked, and the employee feels lost as to how they are only doing "wrong" and becomes even a bigger "problem". Yet I have found that if they are exposed to the good and the bad, they correct the bad, and try even harder to increase the good side of the conversation.
