You are right TheBackUpMan... Not about the money for me at all.  (Don`t get me wrong... when I dare to daydream about the future, there I am rolling around on top of a pile of Benjamins, but that`s just a dream, NOT the drive)

Throughout all of human history there`s been a basic "survival" structure, but there`s also been something that goes on when survival has been temporarily accomplished.

Originally, survival depended on hunting and gathering to get enough food and shelter to live. But even then, when people had a full belly and protected shelter, they felt something missing. Something more went into the overall feeling of satisfaction.

There`s a difference between satisfaction and complacency. Satisfaction includes the as-yet vague observation that all of us have a part of our "self" that goes beyond basic survival. It speaks to entertainment, Art, conversation, socializing, goals, creativity, and so forth.

In a modern society (at least a developed society), money is the replacement survival tool; replacing hunting, gathering, and farming. Getting money is the necessary survival skill and process.

And so there`s also a difference between meeting the necessary survival levels of money, versus "hoarding" or stockpiling. For some people the game of getting money is the goal, just as long ago, the game of hunting (no pun intended) was the goal. But for most people, the money is only the survival process....not the end goal.

It`s just the means to the end .. if I could trade someone a house for a website, I would.

If you start with one red paper clip. Of course you might have to live in Saskatchewan. How picky are you? Ok, so that`s been done. But is there a lesson there? Is it possible that anything could be done if only you can imagine it and have the courage to try?

I am in it for freedom.  I need to replace my current income.  When that goal is close to happening I will "retire" from the regular job and simply work the online job.

Jilly, I think you`re implying that the freedom you`re talking about is freedom from dependency? Not freedom from working, or responsibilities, or being able to do whatever you want, whenever you want, without worrying about consequences, right?

Too many of us end up dependent on someone else`s whim for our paycheck. We put all our eggs in one basket, creating a bottleneck of income. "Diversification" is always a good thing, and having your own business allows you to "find money" from many separate sources (customers, clients, products, etc.).

The end result is that if one or ten sources dry up, you still have hundreds more. That`s freedom....but technically, it`s independence.

I started my own business by default when I moved to Portland in 1980 and there were no jobs to be found in my field.  The week I arrived several ad agencies and design firms closed their doors, and designers were being laid off left and right.

Hi everyone,

That is a great question.  Back in 1984 after 10 years with the government.  I made a mistake on my job which eventually they fired me.  After getting my faith in mankind back I went to get another job and after 2 years was laid off.  Then I got another job and was fired for making a mistake.   At this time in the beginning of the 90`s home based business was a new thing.  So I taught myself everything I needed to know to work from home, tax, etc.

Being self employed is great, I am never broke,   I create the pay, the rates, the mission statements.  No one can tell me when, where or how to work.  I am the creator of my finances.  The sky is the limit.
