I`ve been all over the map with business ideas as well sometimes. What you need to figure out is how you want your life to look. There`s a huge difference between running a restaurant where you have a physical location demanding your attention at all times compared to an e-commerce company that you can work when it`s convenient for you, from your home office, and it`s somewhat automated. Also, having been in the food business, you don`t own it; it owns you.

Good Luck.

sblue,

Lots of good advice here. I`d like to point you back to Joel`s comment and Jeff and Rich Sloan`s book, Startup Nation. Just wrapping up your Ph.D (congrats on completing that long haul!), it`s difficult to decide your life plan, but the book does a great job getting you to think about what is important to you and point you toward the right kind of business to start (or not). Also, remember that the direction you go now doesn`t prevent you from changing direction at a later time. Life is long and business changes quickly. You`ll likely have several careers in your lifetime.

My experience says Joel is right on. Passion about one or more of these areas is what will keep you forging ahead when everything and everyone else tells you to quit.

My last advice is focus. It`s very easy to spread yourself too thin and do a poor job at all your interests. Entertaining, but not a recipe for success. After you decide your initial life direction, pick one direction and go full speed.

If I were you, I`d get a `regular job` in an entrepreneurial pharma company to get some paid exposure to the business world, get to know the business and financial leaders of the company and learn what they do every day. Then use that each evening and weekend to fuel your true passion.

Best of success to you!

The more I see new college grad resumes and hear about the "guidance" provided by campus career centers, I like your first idea.  I have something I wrote that I`d be happy to share.  Also, there is a huge gap between the world of academia and the business world from the search process to orientation at a new company.  I believe hopes are unrealistic when starting a new position and cause people to leave or look for other positions unecessarily.  If your interested in discussing further - drop me a note!

All of your ideas can work, but two jumped out at me.

The first one, job consulting, this will be great if you concentrated on certain populations. States are in need and are paying contractors to provide job counseling services to reentry persons from prison and those who are on the welfare system. You could specialize in one or both.

The pharmaceutical drug company – is ok, I thought better a pharmacy that although provided conventional drugs for people’s ailments, it would focus on natural health products/ drugs and offer services such as nutritional counseling or appointments with a naturopath.

I recently moved from Austin, Texas in which we had a pharmacy of this type and I miss it so much.

Lastly, Too many people are telling you to get a job first, i disagree. You seem smart enough to find your way through with the need of getting bogged down and distracted in the beginning of your life with a JOB (just over broke). This is the time to take chances and learn by doing. Also, There are plenty of folks who started businesses who have never had a "JOB" -- anyone ever heard of Dell Computers.
