Host Gator is very expensive to sign up for a domain compared to others. Isn`t it better to go with a host that offers free domains or a less expensive one?

thanks!

I use GoDaddy as my domain registrar. With coupon codes you can get
domains for about $7/yr (maybe even less). I also use the "Keep my
registration private" option which adds to the cost a bit, but I think it is
worth it.

I believe it is best to buy your domains from a reputable registrar like
GoDaddy and then use them as your homebase for configuring things like
where your website is hosted, etc.

I registered with Yahoo.  It cost about $13.oo per year including the "keep it private" feature.  I definitely recommend the "keep it private" feature.

Free services generally entail an obligation to the hosting company.  They may give away free domain names in exchange for you running advertising on your site.

What is keeping it private? Why would I want to do that and what does it mean?

Thanks!

Keeping it private means that you do not want your information shared with the rest of the world.  It is just a security preference.

I register my domains with my host for 10.00 a year.

Definately pay the extra money for the private feature.  I didn`t on my first site. Shortly after I registered, I received a bunch of junk mail to my home address.

I second the GoDaddy vote.  I have used them to register many domains, host email, and transfer domains and they are inexpensive, with good value and customer service.

I go through godaddy.com too.  As a member of their discount club I`ve been able to lock in my domain name rate at $6.49/per domain per year for the life of my membership with them.  With 100+ domain names, the savings is well worth the cost of membership.

I currently use GoDaddy for all my domain registrations and have for years. They have good prices and I have never had any trouble with them.

I like to keep my domain name registrations separate from my hosting companies. Let`s call this not putting all your eggs in one basket. That way if my web host service deteriorates I can easily switch hosts by changing some settings with the domain name registrar.

Private vs. Public registration will depend on your tolerance for unsolicited spam, mail, and phone calls. Your name, address, email, fax and phone numbers will be publicly accessible for your domain unless you get private registration.

For example, this is what StartupNation`s domain name record looks like:
