I`m interested in going from retail to wholesale, and having the wholesale products made in China from a prototype.  I`m in the initial stages of researching and would like advice on where you go to have products manufactured.  These are non-electronic, gift items.  I have the prototypes, but don`t know how to make the contacts.  Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Owl:

If you contact me I can put you in touch with my manufacturer and rep from China.to see if they can fill your needs. I started out with a US manufacturer, but switched because the savings is very substantial.

Hi,

We are working on promotional production sourcing in China for many years and we are more than happy to make a pre-production sample based on your prototype. Please let me know your email or phone, I would like to talk with you soon.

I can suggest Alibaba.com

Lots of chinese companies that make generic items. Not sure if you just want to distribute no-name items, or have it branded for your own company. They do have articles relating to this on the site though.

Owl - I`ve worked to help facilitate international staffing needs in China for some time and some of the best resources available to you (often at no charge) are the International Trade Centers in various states. They will help in connecting you with Chinese companies interested in expanding their reach and scope by working with American companies. I`ve had personal contact with these folks: http://www.mitc.com/Resources-ETC.html and there are many other organizations like them. Drop me a line if you`d like more information.

They are great sites. Especially when you are not sure where to start. It can get a little tricky when you have a particular product that you want made instead of buying what they already make. Still, it is an excellent way to make contacts.

Two word of advice I would give:

1 - Make sure that you are crystal clear about what you want. Chinese suppliers really don't like quating that kind of uncertainty. Prototypes/samples are really good. Sometimes proper engiring drawings are better. It depends upon the type of product

2 - Have a good idea of the numbers that you will likely order. If you can talk business right from the start they will take you more seriously.

Good luck with it.

China-Buy.com might be helpful as they get in the manufacturers' faces for their customers. Limited specialisation though.

You can find OEM manufactures at ww.globalsources.com.  You can also get advice on sourcing direct from China suppliers (it might be even more cost effective for you!) there and at www.smartchinasourcing.com.  Good luck!
