I'm a young entrepreneur, actually at this point I havent started a business so I guess I'm a wantrepreneur.  I grew up in a small town where you farmed or did some sort of manual labor so I wasn't really in a business rich environment or really have someone to point me in the direction of small business ownership.

I have a lot of ideas because I currently work in a factory doing monotonous work so I have all day to dream up ideas.  My most recent and one idea I've looked into is starting a Cotton Candy business.  Now cotton candy isn't a passion of mine but I believe it would be a good business to get me started and potentially out of my fulltime job so I can start concentrating on that business then potentially other opportunities.  The main hitch is I don't even know when to start.  I've read business books and used other resources to get a knowledge of business but none of that will actually prepare you better than hands on work and knowledge from people that have went through the process of the concept of a business to a reality.

What I'm looking for is a little direction but most of all is a community of like minded people.  I appreciate you taking time to read this and any advice given

Since you have decided to start your own business, don't look back. You need to do a rough estimation of your costs versus the money you can make from sales. Secondly, do a market analysis to know where your potential customers and how many similar businesses are there already in the market. Do an analysis.

Can you afford to start the business you have in your mind or have the money to do it?

Why don't you try an ecommerce business?

Now-a-days, online business is gaining a lot of popularity as most of the people don't want to waste their time in visiting different shops to buy something. Online shopping provides a wide variety of brands and products at a single place. Besides this, various ecommerce websites are providing free home shipping which is another way to attract traffic.

Ecommerce is not what it used to be.

Where are you going to sell your products? ebay?.. you'll pay 13% off the top in fees, scams are rampant and the worst of all.. There is no product that you can sell that I can't find from another seller at a cheaper price.

Instead, start an online business that provides some kind of service. The technical term is called "Saas" (Software as a service) and their are lots of possibilities.

Hi,

I would like to congratulate you for wanting to start your own business.

I recommend getting a notebook, not on your laptop, a real notebook and keep a journal of all your ideas. Date your pages, and keep writing.

If you want to start a business, try doing something that interests you.  It’s much easier creating a company about something you like or are interested in versus starting a business because it’s the latest trend.

Take a look at the SBA and search for how to create a business plan.  When you are reading through the material, think about your business and ask yourself two questions: How will your business help solve a problem? & Are you unique?

Reviewing a business plan is a traditional approach but it gives you an idea of the checklist you have to run through in starting a business.

I hope you find a business that interests you and don’t stop asking questions.

Keep dreaming and don’t be afraid to move forward.

Regards,

Dave M.
