Have you ever felt like you were stuck -- motivated, but something inside seems to be keeping you from doing what it takes to move forward in your business?

If so, where did you turn for help?

I am narrowing my niche and doing research to see what other resources are offering to help folks get unstuck.

Thanks for any resources you can suggest.  How can I help you?

Hi Janet,

Actually I have felt, and still do to a point, just like you.  I read a lot of success stories about people who were a lot worse off than I am and how they kept their determination to make their dream happen.  That right now is my motivation - to accomplish the goals that I have laid out and ultimately succeed with my business.  The one thing that took me a while to learn was to do what you are best at and bring in others to do the rest.  Also establishing small, achievable goals will help keep you moving forward.  I always ask myself `What I can do today to accomplish this goal?  It`s helped me out tremendously.  Good luck with your venture.

Andre

I like to move. Go rollerblading, take the dogs for a walk or a training session. walk near the lake, drive around. Turn up the music and dance around as I clean. Get on the elliptical or the stationary bike. Anything to get me out of the "stuck" physiology.

Of course, I also agree with Andre. I listen to new books to and from my job regularly. I read voraciously. I get online. I read the tweet stream.I visit bookmarked blogs.

But, the number one thing I do to get unstuck is just to do SOMETHING, no matter how small. Make a phone call, write a goal. Promise myself ten new ideas by X time. Taking action is a small way to beat inertia - to get the ball rolling, so to speak.

Over the years I`ve been interested in coming up with easy to remember things about life. Sort of like rules of living. It goes to the issue that philosophy ought to be practical and actually connect with reality.

Two that have become very useful when you`re stuck in a situation that seems totally awful:
  • What can you do in the next 20 minutes that will have any real affect on this? If nothing, then move on to something else, or take a nap. (A nap always works well....) :-)
  • What seems like the best idea right now?
I was reminded of them by Heather`s advice to "do something!" I`d only add that the "something" shouldn`t be just a random action of any kind. It ought to "seem like a good idea," in that you check whether or not you have some sort of feeling or emotional response.

Another very helpful mantra that`s come to the rescue more times than I would`ve chosen:
  • You may not like where you are, but you`re exactly where you`re supposed to be.

I have heard this said, and also a similar viewpoint that hits home with me:

You may not like where you are, but you`re exactly where you`re supposed to be.

Notice, neither say anything about where you want to be. If where you need to be and where you are supposed to be are not where you want to be, it`s time to examine, then do something.

The problem with elevating "want to be" to a high priority is that it leads to elevating anxiety and frustration as well. That`s okay, but it also leads to elevated cortisol levels and health problems.

When we were in grade school, many of us (if not all) could think of plenty of places we wanted to be other than in class. Not always, but often.

Likewise, we wouldn`t be able to prove conclusively that we needed to be in class. We might need to be in school, but that too would be a bit of a difficult argument.

And yet we were right where we were supposed to be.
