I`m looking for the best strategies for finding people for a startup I`m getting off the ground.  What have you found was the most effective?

Wandering around in stores, talking with sale people to see if they`d like to make some extra money.

nhgnikole, thanks for the response.  Craigslist is decent, but seems to be getting more and more generic.  The tough part is trying to find people with the right startup mentality - any thoughts?

I`d guess that less than 5% of the population has a "startup mentality" in the sense that they`ll commit real work and real time, and real inventive thinking to a new company. One out of twenty people. And you can`t get a true random selection.

Any sort of advertising for an "employee" is likely going to get you an employee mentality, which is entirely different from a startup mentality. See?

Be very very specific in your ad. Use some kind of questions as a test.

And wade through 500 responses to find the right one.

I would first try people I know personally, people that I`ve worked with and that I know get things done. You could also ask people you thrust to recommend you good qualified people.

You`re going to put your heart & soul into your start-up so I would minize the risk by only hiring people you know and you can thrust.

Hiring the wrong guy at a very early stage of your venture could hurt your company.
