I think I ate pizza and a chocolate chip cookie every day! I miss my old gluten-filled days.

Egg salad, soggy PB&J, bologna or tuna salad sandwiches in my cowboy lunchbox - along with Fritos, celery or carrot sticks, an apple or an orange, and maybe a Hostess cupcake, Ding Dong,  Ho Ho or pudding cup.

With four kids to pack lunches for each day, when I was in sixth grade - and my mom started working - it was hot school lunches for each of us kids.

Don`t even ask me what "head cheese" is.

Jeff

Jeff,

Don`t need to ask. That shiny stuff always blinded me as I made my way through the Amish booths at the Lancaster, Pennsylvania farmer`s market on Tuesday & Friday mornings.

Jeff Fisher - Egg salad - I forgot egg salad - a main stay in the lunch box! Or maybe just a couple of hard boiled eggs. Oreo cookies, too - a REAL treat.

Bologna and mustard on whole wheat bread.  My mother made us eat whole grains and take vitamins, but she let us eat bologna!  I remember having orange juice in my Flintstones thermos everyday, until I dropped it and the glass broke all over the cafeteria.

High school was a deli sandwich, a Butterfinger, a bag of Skittles and a Tab every single day.  How is it that I was so skinny then?

Rich,

You poor, unfortunate child. For two years straight that was your meal?!! I hope you mixed things up a little! Bologna (can`t say it without humming the tune- Oscar Meyer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A.....)

Lunch boxes.....let`s see. Superman, Scooby Doo, Happy days and then when that started to lose its cool I went to the paper bag.

Menu Varied: Bologna, Egg salad, to PB&J, PB&J with bannanas, almost always an apple and one crunchy bag of some kind of chips.  My favorite was always the PB&J though.

one thing about PB&Js... they taste AMAZING at sea. it`s funny, but when you`re out sailing and there`s no land in sight, when you slather up a good peanut butter and jelly on whole wheat, it is a complete culinary experience! have you seen the franchise food concept that makes only variations of PB&Js?

Having grown up in a family of German heritage, my standard lunch was usually a braunschweiger sandwich with butter or Miracle Whip on whole wheat bread

Oh man, I love braunschweiger
But alas, that isn`t what was in my lunchbox. I usually had a turkey sandwich on white with no crust (hot weather) or chicken noodle soup (cold weather) with apple sauce or tuna salad and a granola bar or ding dong for dessert. Oh, and a carton of 2% milk to drink. (I miss milk! Darn you, lactose intolerance!!)

In high school it was hot lunches all the way. The only thing I really liked was the mashed potatoes and pizza. Everything else was palatable, but not really great.

I usually had a turkey sandwich on white with no crust..........................................  Oh, and a carton of 2% milk to drink. (I miss milk! Darn you, lactose intolerance!!)

I will never understand what the aversion to crust is. Do you remove the crust from a bagel? Do you remove the crust from a pie? Would you remove the crust from the earth? Crust is good and it is but a tiny portion of the entire bread...in fact it should be considered a delicacy  . An entire loaf has but a wafer thin layer of golden delicious crust surrounding it. It`s not like it`s the red band that has to be removed from some bologna that some of us so loved to chew on.

Crust.........it does the body good.

BTW Christina, I am also lactose intolerant. It`s awful but lately I`ve been taking a Lactose pill before eating and it makes all the difference in the world. I can enjoy all of the things that I avoided now. Give it a try........then go eat some crust!

*L* Well, I can`t say I really like crust on regular bread any better now than when I was a kid. But I eat it now, anyway. I don`t know what it is about the crust on a standard loaf of bread. I LOVE crusty breads. The harder, the better. French baguette, yummm... Batard, delicious! I think it`s just the wimpy crust on regular bread. It`s too floppy. It needs to be crispy.  I`m a picky pain in the butt, aren`t I?

A handful of people have talked to me about pills for lactose intolerance. I`m curious, but a little nervous. Lactose really sours my stomach. But I sure do miss milk. I love a bowl of cereal with milk. I used to drink a ton of milk, so when the lactose intolerance hit, somewhere around 20-21, it was a major slap in the face. I`m a cheese-o-holic, too. Maybe I will give those pills a try on a low-key, no-commitments/plans weekend.
