Jeff and I were keynoting the Microsoft Global Partners Small Business Conference this monday in Boston, and they gave attendees a really clever tin lunch pale filled with informational materials as a take-away.

It reminded me of the old days... junior high school... when i used to take my lunch to school everyday. I just reminisced with some StartupNation team members about what their typical lunch was back in the day when they were in school... there were some pretty hilarious stories that ensued...

for me, for two years straight, i toted the following (in a small brown paper bag inside my backpack):

  • a bologne sandwich with two slices of bologne on wonder bread with a healthy schmeer of Miracle Whip
  • a bag of Fritos
  • a can of chocolate pudding
  • a banana (yes, there was one unprocessed product included!)

How in the world did i survive?!

What was your lunch pale filled with?

ps, Fritos sound really good right now. But the idea of the bologne sandwich makes me naucious!

Having grown up in a family of German heritage, my standard lunch was usually a braunschweiger sandwich with butter or Miracle Whip on whole wheat bread, a banana, a stick of celery with peanut butter smeared in the middle, and a carton of school milk.  Oh, and a cookie if I was good.

As I got older, in Junior High I completely changed my lunch and started drinking a soda instead of milk.

Branschweiger, for those unfamiliar, is a type of spreadable liver pate` pork meat sausage thing.  Don`t even ask me what "head cheese" is.

In my Roy Rogers lunchbox, mom provided variety - and she did it for 4 kids every day:

Bologne sandwich or banana sandwich or PBJ or leftover Sunday chicken or leftover anything - always wrapped in wax paper - ZipLoc wasn`t invented yet. No Wonder Bread - in our area of the south is was Maritta Bread - factory was down the street - sure smelled good when you rode by. No pudding in a can - wasn`t invented yet ... but a piece of fruit: apple or orange or banana or grapes - whatever was in season - year-round fruit seasons hadn`t happened yet . No chips or Fritos in the cute, little individual bags - not invented yet - maybe some potato sticks (ever seen `em?). Homemade cookie or fudge (sugar hit for the last half of the day). Bought your milk from the school.

Sorry. No lunch box here. I was the guy beating up everyone for thier lunch money. If you didn`t have any, I`d take a sandwich instead.

OK, not really.

Actually,  I have re-discovered Bologna...the start-up day is so crazy...there is often no time to sit down to eat lunch...I have found myself grabbing a few slices direct from the store wrapper and piling it on a Triscuit..lol

But when I was a kid...Cream cheese and jelley was one of the standards.  I used to hate the way the jelley soaked through the white bread.  Aesthetically it was unacceptable...I was a marketer even in the 4th grade!

Who peeled the red casing skin off the bologna? Or did you eat it?

Speaking of casing, who likes boudoin? If you don`t know, Google or ask your Cajun friends.

Is it "lunch pale" or "lunch pail" - as in bucket. Inquiring minds want to know.

Jeff

maybe the branschweiger actually created brain-swagger for you and that`s why you`re on the path of an entrepreneur. (sorry, i love playing with words!)

I think I had a bologna sandwich, fritos or potato chips, an apple and I remember having shake-a-pudding.  Anyone remember that?  I remember having to pour milk and pudding mix into a cup and shaking it up.  Wow that was a long time ago!  I also remember our principal in grade school.  He could play piano by ear and would serenade us at lunch time.  I remember him playing "Hey Jude,"  and I was thinking how does someone that old know that song!
