Aplus is just as bad as Go-Daddy and 1and1.. Honestly it all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. What I hate about Aplus is that they outsource their technical Support to Russia so the language barrier can really hurt your when you`re trying to make out what they are trying to tell you.

I would agree with Loren.

Stay far away from Godaddy hosting, Yahoo hosting AND their Small Business program.  Yahoo is by far the worst web development tool out there.

We use Hostgator w/ Cpanel and it works perfectly.  Their support is very responsive and the servers are very good for the price.  Cpanel is very user friendly which is what you want if you`re just starting out.

I disagree with Nuevolution, but understand his point, Cpanel may not be the most advanced however it is the most user friendly for new people starting out.   Yes Plesk is a piece of junk provided by Godaddy.

Godaddy is only good for domain registrar though, I highly suggest using them for that purpose. Stay away from Network Solutions for domains.

Tommy,
Again, we go back to how advanced you are in managing Hosting Servers (i.e.DNS settings such as A records, MX records, CNAMES and so forth. If you know what you are doing then you will find that Plesk will put every other Control Panel to shame). Now if you`re just a beginner, then any service out there is good...Like C-Panel per say...

Eh, having used Plesk and C-panel ...

What do you use either of them for, again?

Honestly, I log into those things maybe twice a year. Are you really choosing a host based on that?

GoDaddy`s backend is just cludgy to get anywhere. I use them for all my DNS though.

HostGator has fast support, great uptime, and reasonable prices. Really that`s all you need.

Nikole,
If you`re the end user, I understand your point I barely log into my control panel. But as as server administrator, I have to be logged in at all times. I have to handle the technical end of it, so the end user doesn`t have to do so.
Especially now that I am automating the Plesk system, I have to assure that it works fine.

Hello all,

I am new to the forum.  I am more or less in a startup phase of my business.  I don`t want to dive headfirst and drowned before coming up for air.  So, I have joined several business forums and will be asking a lot of questions.  From what I have seen so far I have a feeling that a lot of you will be able to help me.  Right now I do medical transcription from home part-time.  The question I have for you is which is better to start off with a blog or a website?  They both seem to have the same purpose in that they promote your business.  But which is better?

I thought about this and I want to clarify some things:

I used Plesk early in my internet marketing career.  It was the only control
panel offered by my hosting service and even though I read the manual
I could make neither heads nor tail of it... I just found it baffling.

I don`t consider myself a computer expert by any means. I`m predominantly
interested in doing interesting marketing, not being a technology guy.

About a year ago I invested in a very advanced E-Commerce script and
found that it would be impossible to install it in my Plesk shared server
without modifying Apache Signaure files (or something like that) - which
my hosting service refused to do.

As a result I was forced to migrate my site to another host and I chose one
that had known friendliness to the script I was installing - Fantasos -
CPanel was included on my new host and while I must admit I dreaded
learning a new control panel (consider how baffled I was by Plesk), CPanel
was a revelation... intuitive, clearly laid-out, and it has features in it I had
never though about using before.

If, like me, you want to understand how to administer your own websites
then I recommend CPanel to start with - I know if I had started with CPanel
I would have saved a lot of time and hair-pulling.

If you plan to pay somebody to do it for you  I think you should go with
whatever that person prefers...

And if you are setting up a site to run a particular script I recommend you just
use a hosting service and Control Panel that is recommended by the publisher.

mfjury - a blog or a static site?

Why not both?

You can setup a wordpress blog and make it a static website or
a dynamic blog site.

I use blogging to drive traffic to other, static sites... sites where I
have products to sell.  You can sell products right in your blog as
well.

Your choice of blog or website is really secondary to what you
have as a marketing message.  If you have a blog and you want to
get search-engine traffic to it that requires making a commitment to
updating it frequently with information of relevance to your target
market... which requires ongoing research.

Its a much-neglected tidbit of information - when you are starting
out the easiest way to get traffic to your site and people interested in
your business is NOT the internet - its the telephone... internet traffic
comes later and with experience... unless you plan to pay for traffic.
