Hello Everyone,

I was wondering what you do when you have identified companies that you would like to have as customers but they are out of town and you can`t just pop in to introduce yourself.  I have identified a list of companies that I would like to target and I was thinking about sending them a letter, brochure, or a rock (I sell rock and mineral kits) as a short introduction to our company and telling them that I will follow up by phone on a specific day.  Is that a good idea so that when I call they have a clue what my company does or should I just pick up the phone and start cold calling?

Thanks!

Tracy

Hi,

I really find a better success rate when I call/email and "ask permission" to send them information.  Otherwise I am just another piece of mail....but if you do decide to send out a brochure/sample rock you could use this possibly best or worst line:

We are Stuck Between a Rock & Hard Place?

Our company would like to supply your company with rocks, minerals, and school supplies but we can not get a hold of you.  Please call 1-800-NUMBER and let us know when a good time talk or to request free samples.

Are there any trade shows in the rock and mineral collection `industry`?  If so, it is well worth the time (and expense) to attend.

Hey there Tracy!!

I agree with Jeff.  I`m in almost 30 stores in 17 states I have only made 4 physical sales calls and they were all here in SC.  For all the others, I always call first, find out who the decision maker, owner or buyer is, try to speak with them, then ask them if I can email or mail them product information.  DEFINTLEY call first.

Hi Tracy,

A "warm" call is definately better than a cold call, meaning to call them first and make the introduction. Show them your web-site and tell them you will be sending them information and that you will following up.

When sending the information, I would highly recommend sending a sample of your product with it. Not only can they touch and feel your product, but your package should stand out and not be a "flat piece of mail" that can sit on anyones mail pile. This is called a 3-D mailing.

People are much more apt to open a package that seems like something inside rather than just a brochure in a flat envelope... how boring!

Good luck!
