Don't take on more than you can chew. Business success requires hard work, skill and luck (among other things). If you don't have the skills/knowledge to successfully market your business online, than you should hire the right professional to do it for you.

I'm not trying to discourage you - I'm just being realistic. Investing in your marketing is a good investment (better than most). If you are not going to take it seriously your business will be in danger!

If you have a low budget, consider a freelancer, or a student. If you have the marketing budget, go for the best!

Smart internet marketing can pay off quickly, so it's a good idea to explore this seriously!

A consistent brand will help you stand out in a crowd and attract loyal customers.

When I did marketing for a company called EF Buys, which is a daily deal website for small business, I had to use many social medias to do marketing. Facebook, twitter, linkedin, blogs and emails have all been used.

But never try to use them all at once, otherwise it will be a unforgettably frustrating experience.

Also, give it a personal touch instead of just a cold sales message.

Build or partner with an established email list to have a good userbase. 

With all those, EF Buys has been very successful. It has a userbase of some 500,000 small business owners or entrepreneurs on its mailing list.

It depends really, it depends on what type of business you have. But there are basic stuffs that you can do like SEO. Making your presence known in the internet is hard work.

Here are a few ways you can gain traffic:

Social Networking site - This is a great venue to promote your business. You can use Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIN to do this.

Next is Forum - Yes, forums can be a huge traffic provider if used well.

Article Directories - This is also one way to gain good traffic to your site. Post articles here and leave you link.

These are just a few methods you can use. 

There are several methods that one needs to try. In most cases it depends on the nature of your business or goals.

I suggest you must try all the methods listed below, then observe the best one that gives out results. Because in many cases one method works far better than the other. Like in our case (selling promotional products) sending out emailers works better than any other medium of online marketing.
