The links splitting should be avoided as it should point to the Url only. It simply means that links should point to do the same URI rather than some to the index page name and others to the directory root. Otherwise it leads to nonperformance of the pages in the website.

Split link means canonical or duplication of url. To avoid this you can use 301 to redirect that url.

Will explain you with an example: For instance, while doing an email campaign for your company's latest offer, you have added your website URL in the newsletter. This URL is an outside link.. Now when patrons click on this link they should land to a page where the information of the offer are mentioned breifly and the URL of the corridor page should not be of some other website... IF they are different... associations will break... users might just get lost in the website and leave with no explanation in hand.

It's important to remember that a link is seen as a "vote" of sorts in the eyes of the search engines. So with the above example, we now have 1 "vote" for www.example.com and 1 "vote" for example.com. Because of the webmaster inadvertantly linking to the non-www version of the site, we have split possible "votes".

We should always try to do links as the same url it is much batter for the ranking and quality.
