I agree with PearAnalytics. Avoid this mistake it split the traffic to your website. 301 redirect can help in this. But on can avoid this situation by keep the backlinking to one url. Means when you are doing backlinking process try to keep this for one url.

Solve your Link Splitting by using 301 redirection. Also make sure you use one URl from wherever you get your backlinks from.

If we put 301 redirection from non-www version to www version to solve this issue or else you can place rel="canonical" tag to solve the issue

Split according to my knowledge these links are not redirected links to the right place, mainly because it will lead to some error page. They seriously affect search engine rankings.

Many answers say that Link Splitting is when you use different URL for the same page. How about when we use the wrapped URL with http://bit.ly or http://goo.gl/ etc. Why not these URL are considered to be a split URL?

Hello..

Splitting links are those links which does not redirect visitors to the proper location which they are looking for and It could happen when you have two different versions of the same webpage.

One biggest disadvantage of Link-Splitting is, search engine get confused in which site it will give the rank and thus consider as spam.

In the mathematical field of knot theory, a split link is a link that has a (topological) 2-sphere in its complement separating one or more link components from the others. A split link is said to be splittable, and a link that is not split is called a non-split link or not splittable. Whether a link is split or non-split corresponds to whether the link complement is reducible or irreducible as a 3-manifold.
