I read in an article that one should avoid splitting of links.
Links that come from outside shall have same url as internal links of the same landing page.
What does that mean?
I am quite confused

That most likely has to do with using rewrite rules when it comes to urls.

Example:

http://www.greyskymedia.com/pages/viewUrl/welcome is the technical URL for that page.

BUT, to make things pretty we use rewrite rules so the url becomes:
http://www.greyskymedia.com/welcome

what you saw was probably suggesting that your outside links link to /welcome rather that the "real" URL.

hope that help

Splitting links are those links which does not redirect visitors to the proper location which they are looking for and mostly it leads to some error pages. They badly affects search engine rankings.
