The term "content", when used in reference to intellectual property law, refers to information that is provided for a hearing, usually within a specific context. The contents may vary on the subject, scope, detail, material and medium enterprises. Any information transmitted to an audience can fall under the rubric of content.

I had to laugh - my immediate answer to your question, "What is content?" was to launch into a lengthy post about content marketing and how to use it effectively.  Shows you where my mind is all the time!

Following the discussion, I see that what you are asking is really "what differentiates true content (things with meaning) from meaningless content."

I would say...

  • Perspective - having a unique take on a subject
  • Expertise - the authority, knowledge and ability to communicate all of this through your writing
  • Ideas - sharing different, unique, original ideas about your subject matter with the world

Happy marketing,
Jeanne

Hi Matt,

I think you've raised a great question as it's obviously sparked a lot of discussion.

Content is no more or less than what's in something.

In marketing, the most important part of what's in something is the "what's in it for me" factor to your audience.

Just as important to the audience is the idea of "how much of what's in this is for me?"

What's important to you as a marketer as you produce content is: "does my content establish me as a resource my audience will want to keep coming back to and want even more from?"

Further, "am I producing sufficient quantity of great content on a regular enough basis to grow my audience and keep my current audience thinking of me?"

Content is the actual text in the body of the page. Content may include personal information or public news.

As per my knowledge Content is any information that is being distributed which is from a book, a magazine article, and the information on a website are all content.

Content is one of those odd words that seem to have two entirely different meanings, depending on context.
