Negative SEO is the reverse of search engine optimisation. The aim of search engine optimisation is to increase a site's visibility in the SERPs. With Negative SEO, the aim of the procedure is to reduce a page's rankings in the search results. This article includes information on how negative SEO can be done, and some of the steps you can do to prevent it from happening to you. Or at least reduce the impact.

I think negative SEO is building spam links on competitor's website in order to decrease their ranking deliberately. But I don't totally agree with this technique.

Negative SEO can take a couple of different forms but in general, it refers to someone purchasing links, unnatural links, that are then aimed at a website belonging to a competitor in an attempt to negatively affect their ranking in search engine results. Another negative SEO tactic is to bomb them with 5-star reviews so that it appears that the reviews are paid reviews. When it appears to the search engines that reviews are purchased rather than natural the site can be penalized. Basically, negative SEO is the opposite of using white hat, purposeful SEO strategies to help increase a site or page’s ranking in SERPs. It is done from outside a targeted site to decrease its PageRank. It is a malicious attempt used by competitors. The point is to decrease a competitor’s ranking so that your ranking can move up in the search engine result pages.

Due to Google’s new updating of “Pengium”, “Negative SEO” has exploded with people blaming it for every issue in ranking for websites.

Paid links, Fake reviews, duplicate content, crawling speed etc are some of the tactics of Nagative SEo.
