A shopping cart is a software application that typically runs on the computer where your Web site is located (the Web server), and allows your customers to do things such as searching for a product in your store catalog, adding a selected product to a basket, and placing an order for it.

The shopping cart "integrates" with the rest of your Web site. In other words, there are typically links on your Web pages that customers can click on, and which allow them to perform some of the functions described above. For example, many ecommerce Web sites have a "search" link appearing on every Web page, as part of the navigation area. The link points to a feature (i.e. the search feature) provided by the shopping cart.

Generally I look for:

Large, Functional Product Images:

According to Matt Winn, " whenever you’re shopping online, the product image is the only opportunity you have to see that product, so if it’s not impressive from the photo, customers aren’t going to buy "

Single-Page, Fast Checkout:

A shopper interested in buying wants to complete this step as quickly as possible, and a merchant should try to get out of the way.

Search

Some ecommerce platforms do not support site search. So, search application must be effective enough.

Coupons and Discounts

A good ecommerce platform will have couponing and discounting built in.

Research available shopping cart companies or software. If this is your first time providing online sales, choose a company like Ecommerce, PayPal or another online cart supplier. If your company already has high online sales, buy shopping cart software and host it yourself.

As an operator of an Ecommerce site associated with a distribution business I can say that I know it sounds cliche but simplicity is the most important aspect. The more you can streamline the shopping cart the more likely a consumer is to go through with the sale. In addition to this, it reduces headaches of mixed up and incorrect orders down the road.
