What are your thoughts on non-exclusive contracts?

What are your thoughts on non-exclusive contracts?  Eventually I hope to license my product to a major retailer if it makes it that far.  I was initially going to sell my product directly to the customer, then you that sales data to approach independent retailers, and then use that data as ammo for approaching a major retailer.  Do major retailers mess with non-exclusive contracts?

Any information on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Why don`t you contact major retailers and find out? You could even do it over the phone. My guess is that different retailers will have different policies and it will be product dependent. If if is a fast moving product they won`t bother about exclusivity. You can bet Kellog products are not sold on an exclusive basis!

Right, that`s a good point.  Have you personally had success licensing your products?
