Hello,
Does anyone know what are the few things that are essential to a website`s exposure?  I know links, content, metatags and keywords.  But what about Yahoo Directory,  Zoominfo, Digg, Twitter, Facebook and other sites like these?  Are they worth the time and expense?

Thanks!
Tracy

MiteyMite posted a really excellent site that showed me pretty much the overview you`re looking for:
Web Grader

A presence on directories and social websites does = more website exposure. But I would not pay for it, you can gain exposure but putting in some time and effort not $$.

Also, while web grader provides some nice information, it is not totally accurate.

Roland,
I was seeing some of that myself. Setting aside whatever numbers they`re showing, I also saw reference to directories that either take forever to accept your site, or that you have to pay money to join. That had me suspicious.

I also saw this thing that if your domain is set to expire in less than 1 year, supposedly Google (according to a patent application) believes the site is less committed than if it`s going to expire in 100 years (or maybe less). :-)

I would wonder why Google can`t look at its own index and see that a site has already been around for 5 years, thereby being committed.

The reason I posted the link to Web Grader wasn`t that it`s accurate. Instead, it`s that each category of information is a whole topic in itself regarding what may or may not be important in such an open-ended question as above.

I used Web Grader on both of my sites and that is when I started getting overwhelmed!  There are so many options and my sites are very different.  When I got to the Zoominfo and I couldn`t figure out how to insert my companies I started wondering if this stuff was really worth my time to figure out.  One of my sites is easier than the other to work with - the kids geology site.  The other site where I sell things like bookends, candleholders, windchimes and other decor items made of rock and mineral is more difficult.  Customers love the items but I don`t think that most people know that these types of products exist so trying to compete in searches for "bookends" doesn`t work very well.  I think maybe at least for that site, I should focus on joining sites where people can see the products like findgift.com and yahoo shopping.

Hi Tracy,

Your top comparison shopping sites will be Yahoo Shopping, Shopping.com, Google Shopping (google base), NexTag, and Shopzilla.com.  There are others but the majority of the traffic will come from here.

You may also want to look into `coupon submission.`  I have started to list the most popular coupons sites that allow you to submit your coupons (brand awareness, leads, and back-links)

http://directory.webbizideas.com/internet-marketing/coupon-submission/

Craig, what would you classify FindGift.com?  A social shopping website?  Do you know more sites like this Tracy?  I am trying to build a list for them too.

Tracy,
We`ve found that we`re in a similar situation with our signal flags. First, although we sell these flags that`s not what we "sell." It took us awhile to figure out that we actually sell "secret messages." The other thing is that we sell "personalized." Personalized what?...messages.

None of the current online stores, canned Web sites, or packaged shopping carts handle our particular situation. They`re designed for commodity items, easily broken down into units. So no matter what we tried to do, we kept getting "blurred" by larger or related categories that were entirely generic.

One thing that`s worked really well for us has been to have a never-ending set of auctions on eBay with the "Buy it Now" feature. It`s only one or two per 7-day period, but it`s always up there. Whether you like or dislike eBay, it does get a lot of attention from search engines.

You can`t put a link to your Web site in the auction, but you certainly can put your logo and company name. Those with some thought can likely find your site that way.

The other thing Kathy started doing, which we did more as a lark, was to create a public WordPress blog, on their site---not on our site. That`s where she`s been able to write whole posts about individual key words, key phrases, and concepts.

For example: We wanted to link our signal flags to yachting, and yacht clubs. Most combinations of search-engine phrases and queries got lost. But in this blog, Kathy was able to write an article about "yacht clubs and burgees." What`s a "burgee?" Exactly! It`s a specialized yacht-club flag

Because the blog is on WordPress` site, it gets searched and viewed a whole lot more than if it were on our own site. We have a linked logo back to your site, and many links throughout articles back to our site. We also have a "visit our blog" button on our site, taking people to the blog.

The combination of these two strategies has very strongly helped us differentiate our "flags" "messages" "banners" "personalized banners" and such keywords, offering a sort of second-tier concentration. If someone goes to eBay and puts in "signal flags," they get maybe a max of 80 items....not 1,000,000 items on Google.

Finally, we use the Alt Text tag on EVERY image we have anywhere on any page. They don`t always say generic things like "Home button." Instead, they say something like "Home to US Navy Signal Flag page." We`ve now become heavily indexed and present on the Google "Images" tab. That, of course, gets us back to our own site as well.

If you sell bookends, the next step is to classify that word from it`s high-level set, all the way down to its unique identifier. Bookends are part of the overall set of books, so you could write a blog article about "What to do with Too Many Books!" The article could be about "organizing my library," and as an option, show a picture of some classy bookends made out of unusual rocks and stone.

Of course each picture would then provide a capition and link back to your order page, or a descriptive page for that particular pair of bookends.

Jeff,
I`d say that FindGift.com is a Directory. It`s a really well done iteration of directories, but it ultimately is a consolidation of many other Web sites into an "index" of sorts. The search feature, being done as a question-answer type format is brilliant. :-)

Thank you so much for all of your input!

Jeff - I will look into all of these shopping outlets.  I think these are going to be important for us.  I haven`t run across any others but if I do I`ll let you know for your list.

Craig - I`m definitely going to do the Wordpress blog as you suggested!  Great idea.  I used to do ebay and I`m sure its a good idea I just got tired of the time it took.  I`ll look at it again because I know you are right about the visibility.

Tracy,
On the eBay thing, we have a couple of plain ads we made up, stored on Kathy`s hard drive. All it takes is either renewing an ad, if we want, or copying and pasting the code for one of the others.

The trick with eBay is that you don`t go to the HTML or source page, and copy in the actual code. Instead, you view the ad in something like Nvu, then select it and copy it into the regular eBay editing window. It only takes a couple of minutes, and we use 7-day ads on all of them.
