I think social media is best way to get traffic on your website or blog. There are many websites of social media which has huge audience and that website like facebook, twitter, StumbleUpon, delicious, Digg, etc… So you can use some different techniques in that website to get traffic. You can also use bookmarking, CSS submission and forum posting for more traffic.
According to me,Social media and networking sites are best source for increasing the traffics towards your website. They are most effective for increasing the quality visitors for your website. Some other techniques like forum posting,social bookmarking,blog commenting and posting etc are useful for increasing the traffics towards your website.
One thing from where you can get good traffic is by creating blog within website and posting new, unique and good content in that blog on regular basis. Optimizing old pages will only give you specific traffic but from blog posting you can get traffic against different keywords and images also. Just create good post and then share it on top bookmarking sites and networking sites.
I'm not sure of the best way to get traffic and backlinks using social networking yet but I use some of the other techniques mentioned. Social bookmarking is also something that I need to look into more. Is it a good effective technique?

The most efficient way for me is social media marketing. By promoting valuable tips and interacting with other members, we gain 80 to 100 unique visits per day.
