Didn`t do it myself, but saw a friend do it and rue it.

He hired his son-in-law!

Lost money. Lost son-in-law. Had a divorced daughter and her kids to care for.

I am sure there are more mistakes ahead of me, but here is what I have learned after being in a service business for 7 years...
  1. Believe in Yourself More Than You Believe in Others - When you are new in business you can be pulled in many different directions, distracted by people you think have it all figured out, only they don`t know you and what works best for you.  Mentors are important but only when they really get to know you and your goals.
  2. Go One Step Deeper Than You Think - Too often we start on the surface with our marketing, communications and follow-up, it really does take more than you think so become comfortable being uncomfotable and going one step further every time.  It pays off big time.
  3. Keep It Simple - I spent so much money on fancy websites, cards, not too mention networking and tradeshows only to find that what people really want is an experience of you.  There are definitely easier and less expensive ways to do this.  Keeping it simple saves you money and helps you to come out from hiding beihind your pretty props.
I think those are the 3 biggest things I have learned in all my years and by learning from them I actually started to make some money and really enjoy what I am doing.  It made it easier too.  I am still learning lots and making mistakes but I suppose that is why I enjoy having my own business to learn and grow and show myself what I can do.

Here`s to learning and growing from our mistakes!

Debt and partnerships...a double curse.

After breaking away from both, there`s a freedom like no other.
