Although the vast majority of content on the web is published in English, users around the world are making important and interesting contributions in languages such as Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Portuguese and Russian. To help make sense of it all, free machine translation (MT) tools such as Google Translate and Yahoo!’s Babel Fish offer users the ability to translate dozens of languages in an instant. While the translations produced by these tools are usually far from perfect, they provide enough of a gist to make the information meaningful and useful. Nowadays, Internet users make use of free machine translation tools tens of millions of times each day to translate information as they surf the web.

Using a pioneering approach to machine translation, the Google Translate service provides translations from 52 different languages. Google has capitalized on its access to incredible amounts of data, largely in the form of transcripts from the proceedings at the United Nations, which have been rendered into some 23 languages by professional human translators. Google Translate trawls this invaluable source of data, along with text from the Google Books scanning project and additional Internet resources, for likely translation matches.

Free translators allow users to translate snippets of text, entire web pages, or documents. With the click of a button, users can render the text from one language to another in mere seconds. These tools also come in handy for translating comments and posts from social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, allowing people to connect with users from around the world without fear of the language barrier.

While free translation tools do offer a means for readers to achieve a basic understanding of a text, computers fail to render the nuanced, culturally correct translations created by humans. Machine translation frequently proves useful to decipher foreign language blogs or posts on social media, but this technology falls short when the occasion calls for precise language, carefully crafted wording, and subtle turns of phrase. Important documents such as legal texts, medical and pharmaceutical documentation, patent translations and other types of technical literature should always be translated by experienced professional translators.

I absolutely agree that online translation tools are not good when high quality translation is needed.

Free translators can be a tool, plug-in or a software with which you can translate documents or texts easily. However, the accuracy won't be that much as it is supposed to be. For simple tasks, such translating tools are good, however, for professional or your business, consider hiring professional translation agencies only.
