It seems to me, that "Small Business" covers a WIDE array of business sizes. In my estimation a small business could be as small as a one person company that sells knick knacks on E-bay (or other online outlets) all the way up to a one or two location Car dealership. Clearly one drives vastly more sales, revenue and profit than the other yet they could both be defined as small business. Perhaps the knickknack seller might better be defined as "micro" business or the car dealer as medium sized.

How do you define your business? And why do you define it that way.

Do you aspire to grow into a large business? Does being an owner of a small business condemn you to small thinking?

i can`t stand two terms:

1) small business

2) entrepreneur

they both miss the spirit and meaning of the whole activity of pursuing your great ideas and grand visions and "entrepreneur" is about the clumsiest word in the world.

i look forward to people`s response to your question, but can i also request that someone rename our sector/lifestyle/work?

The definition of my business is defined as a dream coming to life with the potential to succeed through hard work and vision.  It is defined this way because this is exactly what came to mind upon reading your post.  However, I do not and will not look at this venture as "small" because I`m just starting out or have little to no overhead.

My aspiration is to be a successful business first.  Any growth in operation as a result of paying my dues, etc. is welcome, but is not the focus.  Meaning, I am not in this to take over the world overnight, so a slow start works for me.  Rather, I have a sincere love and passion for celebrating life and that is driving me to have BIG dreams and BIG energies to bring those dreams to fruition.

Condemnation becomes reality if one ignores or does not seek and implement versatility/change/flexibility/diversity, etc.  Business size neither defines or nor condemns one`s vision.

Just me 2 cents

As per my opinion, small business is a business that is privately owned & operated, with a little number of employees. it is a simple & easy compare then another business.

Small business is a paradigm of a business and is a bit difficult to define. To identify it one may draw contrasts from large business.

Large busienss

  1. low margin
  2. high volume
  3. stable market

Small business

  1. Large margins
  2. low volume
  3. dynamic market

How that helps.

According to me Small Business is a business having small activities, small turnover, less manpower, less energy consumption & much more hard work, much more involvement, much more efforts.

I would have to agree with ShyEntrepreneur, but considering that everything about business evolves every now and then we can't really put a clear definition for what is small business and what is large business in a fixed manner. People see it in their own realities when they give "definition"; they merely have a check-list and use it to frame their perception of how their business is and what category it's fit under.

For the common people, at least those that I know of, if they have more than three branches of their business office/showroom/dealership and have more than 80 employees per branch, they label themselves as owning a large business. On the other hand, if their business is personally managed by them (opening/closing everytime) and is quite opposite of the former's standards, they declare that they own a small business.
