Hi There,

A friend and I have a sound website service that we`ve vetted and researched.  It will be popular for the intended audience.  The problem is we don`t sell anything.  It is a service.  How does a service-related website generate income? Eventually, we`ll have an e-commerce section of the site but it will be in the second phase.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Lori

Lori,
You may be under the mistaken impression that a service sells nothing. Consider your doctor, a lawyer, your accountant, or perhaps the people who pick up the garbage in your neighborhood. Then consider the electric company, gas company, phone company, and so forth, all of which are services. Of course there also are teachers, consultants, instructors, and so forth.

No business can exist that sells nothing. Services sell knowledge, information, efficiency, or time.

If you sell nothing, then you might try selling space for advertising, perhaps the pay-per-click (PPC) system.

Build a list and do joint ventures to sell products interesting to
yoru website visitors.  If your service is local-only you can create
a how-to product with knowledge you have.

I have found that it`s all about getting the word out. Someone will  need your service so you need to lead them to you.  Look into some of the low cost advertisting web sites like BizAdSplash. Little investment and a good way to test your traffic patterns.

focus on generating traffic with your eyes closed and don`t worry about the $ aspect.....it will come. i am assuming you are offering something of value, even if it is intangible information.

Dear All,

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement.

Yes - the service is very valuable for the audience.  We want to be able to share the service with everyone, so we don`t want to offer paid memberships - especially in this economy.

Eventually, we`ll have product to sell but not immediately.

Look forward to hearing more...

Networking, networking, networking.  Try to get the word out about your services through community networking--chamber of commerce if you belong, etc.  Also, list your website/services where ever you can--free listings count!

Good Luck

I totally agree with Craig. "No business can exist that sells nothing:" You are either selling a product or a service. For example, a person who is a lawyer is ofcourse selling his skills.

Dear AnuD1973,

You and Craig, along with others, bring up a very good point.  We are looking into PPC and an exclusive membership scheme where there are some services on the site that are non-member while others offer a monthly/ 6-mos and 1 year membership fee.

Thanks so much for your kind help!

Best,
Lori
