Hi Guys,

In a recent post here at SUN, we had a fierce discussion about Web 2.0. Some suggest its nothing knew but a buzz word. Some argue that it encompass a group of concepts which have come to the fore lately and we need to understand them.

 Guy called Tim O`reilly sometimes ni 2005 coined this phrase in a conference. Some comparitive features he gave are:

Web 1.0   Web 2.0
DoubleClick --> Google AdSense
Ofoto --> Flickr
Akamai --> BitTorrent
mp3.com --> Napster
Britannica Online --> Wikipedia
personal websites --> blogging
evite --> upcoming.org and EVDB
domain name speculation --> search engine optimization
page views --> cost per click
screen scraping --> web services
publishing --> participation
content management systems --> wikis
directories (taxonomy) --> tagging ("folksonomy")
stickiness --> syndication

I forget who said something like "Web 2.0 does what 1.0 couldn`t" -- I like how it leaves the "what" hanging and open (to define a thing is to kill it;~) ... it`s been two years it`s now cost per action, mashups, and a million other flickering shadows -- just saying we shouldn`t confuse good tools for gods or honest to goodness personal contact.

And he wasn`t even scratching the surface!

Some of those things are unfair comparisons. Like the CPC thing, and moving from DoubleClick to AdWords. Some of these things invited their own problems.
But it`s not just moving from one to the other. It`s never been moving on to the other. It`s about doing what works best for your business. Like the whole blogging bandwagon thing ... only do it if it makes effective sense for you. Otherwise, don`t.

There are also differences in how dynamic content is created.. Moving from Flash to Ajax/Javascript..  If you look at the sties in my signature you`ll see what I mean -- dynamic web content without using a 3rd party application.

Utropic,

I am just interested in what your reasoning for not using flash but using ajax/javascript instead is?

I really don`t see the need for any of that on the site you have there.  Is there a reason you developed the site that way?

It`s not a buzz word but a methodology that people should get familar with.  In this day and age someone can`t just throw up a site on the web and expect traffic to come to the site.  Nor can you expect a website to maintain customers in this day and age if all you have is a bunch of web pages.  You have to leverage different tools to make your website stand out from the others.

I agree.  In the end it comes down to more about what the site offers the customer more than what technologies you use to do so.

User centered design has and always will be the key to a successful website.
