Are there any computer geeks living around Sequim, WA? My dear sweet Dad who will be 83 in April will be heading up there around the 1st or 2nd week of April and will stay until Aug. or Sept. He will be bringing his computer (he likes email and following his stocks) When he`s here in CA the other months, I have to go out to his place almost every week, because he`s hit the wrong key, changed or deleted something and he gets frustrated. I am willing to pay a small fee to somebody to help him if he needs it. Like hooking up the computer and getting on the internet the day after he gets there! He get`s impatient. He`s also hard of hearing, so it makes it hard for me to give him directions over the phone. He`s going to be using budget dial up, which I could load on the computer before he leaves, but he says he`ll do it when he gets there. Did I mention he`s stubborn? Let me know.

 Thanks Karen

Well my suggestion is that you buy him a book for computers like computers for dumbies. I would also suggest that you get terminal services setup on his machine so you could terminal in and fix things (presuming he didn`t mess it up too bad) and finally get the number to the local bestbuy that has Geeksquad. They can come and fix it.

My wife is like your Dad, I branded the "Just say No" campaign into her computer mind set. If the computer ask for anything just press no/cancel unless your 1000% positive. It`s worked quite well espcially after she hosed the machine and I made her reinstall the OS. She wasn`t very happy about sitting there for 2 hours installing applications. :) That will teach them every time!

What are terminal services? The book idea wouldn`t work, unless it`s all about troubleshooting and he wouldn`t take the time to read it. And I`ll see if they have a bestbuy in the area.

Terminal services (or remote desktop) is something that allows you to remotely connect (through the internet) to another machine and do tasks. You can read more about it here:

I`ve done things like that where I go in and change his internet settings or create new internet connections for him from my computer, it`s the computer itself. An example is that somehow he changed his email preferences on his comp. to outlook express and now he`s not getting email at his peoples pc email address. This was done on his settings page. I will go out there this Sat. and fix it for him, I hope. He just got this new comp. last month from HP. Some days I wish he wouldn`t touch things. He`s also been told not to let anyone else touch it, unless they know what they are doing. I`m not a computer geek either, but I can work my way around a computer ok and usually get what I need done. I will check out the link. Thanks for the info.
