I just saw this news story hit the wire and I was moved to comment openly.

Warren Buffet, the second richest man in the world

donates $37billion dollars to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

We have all seen capitalist wealth demonized. We`ve heard the socialist argument and the occasional whispers of a life desired by the anarchist.

Today we see the awesome power of  American capitalism and how properly devoted to a life of financial success, a single man can give back to the world that has given him so much. With this one swift move, Warren Buffet will help more people than we as a group or as individuals could ever reasonably expect.

While there are those that believe that money is the root of all evil there are fortunately those who understand that no amount of empathetic hopeful hand wringing can replace the unquestionable ability of cash to get things done. By getting things done I mean helping people in ways that, without funding, would be impossible.

Never let it be said that there is not a link between the love in one`s heart and the cash in one`s pockets.

For more information about the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and all that they have been able to achieve. Visit the website: http://www.gatesfoundation.org/default.htm

eric,

thanks so much for bringing this to light. it`s incredible what the wealthy are capable of achieving.

one cool thing is that it goes beyond the wealthy. for example, TrickleUp provides micro loans ($200) to people all over the world and those relatively few dollars literally change lives. they bring people from destructive livelihoods like prostitution and poaching to sustainable and productive activities like weaving, haircutting, etc., that feed their families.

to your point, hurray for buffet and gates setting such an amazing example - but to my point, we can all do something that`s big hearted and big in impact.

Rich,

No question. I cannot agree with you more. Buffet`s gift does not diminish the importance and need for all people to do what they can to help those less fortunate regardless of their financial well being.

We may not posess massive wealth but no healthy person on this earth should be so poor in spirit or bereft of kindness so as to not extend their able hand to give comfort to the meek and weary or otherwise fill some forsaken need.

Good.

- but the poverty level in this country is the same as
in 1969(mostly white females).

- lots senoirs are facing difficaulties with medical
costs

- national debt is all time high

- illegal drug usage is still strong

- educational costs are going through the roof

- national security is at risk

blink our eyes and $37bil will be gone.

What am I to do?

misterwicks2006, you also forgot people want more "free-bees" from their government which means taxation must pay for it. On the other hand everyone complains about too much taxes.

I have thought about moving to an Asian country, but keeping my American citizenship and business. But I love being in America more than any other country (I have traveled) and I think I will become part of the solution instead of the problem.

Hurry for Mr. Buffet and the Gates Foundation. I appreciate the work they have done... Both Mr. Buffet and the Gate`s.

But I hear you misterwicks2006. What are we to do?

Misterwicks,

Thanks for reminding me that 37,000,000,000 dollars is but the tinkling of a dime in a coffee can.

Your post has reminded me to focus on the dour and miserable forgotton  hapless souls. How can we celebrate a great moment of charity when so many suffer in our country!? There are people. Yes, there are people in this country that cannot afford cable tv! Outrageous!

If you have ever heard the term that it is easier to be negative than positive. I think you have made that point. You just put a huge "BUT" after the single biggest charitable offering ever made on the face of this planet. Do you think that Bill Gates should have announced "Hey everyone, my friend Mr Buffet just gave us a 37billion dollar gift that will allow us to educate and promote health  science around the world but please people, please let us not lose sight of all the really bad things that will continue to plague us until the end of mankind!"

I don`t care how you try to qualify your frank, straightforward and flippant remarks. Your post was out of line and I`m here to tell you that. Don`t think that every thought that comes into your mind has to pass through your fingers and onto this forum. Think carefully about what you are saying. Take your time.

your right...this ain`t candid camera. BUT i wonder how many people really think including Buffet...somehow we are confusing critical thinking and critisim (glad i didn`t jump on the bandwagon of thought about HOW we are not educating are people, too! Look at my sentenaces, I can hardly write. Bad, very bad!!)

I just hope that Mr. Buffets donation isn`t eaten alive by administration fees, like so many other contributions are.

Politically correct society you win, now you can have your cake, too!

Surely you cannot be that thin skinned Mr Wicks.

It`s Ok for people to argue points.  I would only ask that you not disregard the time and place. A little diplomacy is all I would ask.

If I have offended anyone by my response to Mr Wicks, I do apologize. That includes Mr Wicks.

Mr Wicks, if you do happen to read this. I must say that I have been entertained by your chatter and I look forward to remaining on this forum.

Hi everyone. Thanks for giving me your valuable time by reading my message. Let me introduce myself. I am tanvir arafin, a 19 years old boy from Bangladesh. I have passed my high school examination October 2005. Its been almost a year now but I still couldn’t get myself admitted to any university as I am facing serious financial problem. My dad is unemployed from January 2005. We are living in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. As living cost here is pretty high, we r coming to an end of our bank account. To let you know, we don’t have any kind of property of our own. The only thing that we have is our bank account. It’s still not sure whether my dad can get back a job so it’s getting impossible to continue my university education. Getting admitted in university is huge amount of money. You know we don’t have enough money left for our living cost, how can we fund my university education then? So all I need now is something that can keep me up and going. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a financial aid, scholarship or student loan or whatever; I just need to pay my tuition fees. So I have been searching consistently online for any kind of help. But you know what I have figured out? I just figured out all the scholarships out there are for extraordinary brilliant scorers who reside in those rich countries like USA, CANADA, AUSTRALIA etc. There are so little opportunities for internationally poor students. Students from USA, Canada, Australia Uk never have to think about their tuition. If you go to study in UK, as a foreign student you have to pay for around 5000-15000 British pounds and so little scholarship opportunities are for you. And for British citizen its only 3000 pounds a year + you get all financial help.

Even student loan schemes are difficult to get. It seems education is not for poor. I don’t understand why bill and Melinda gates foundation doesn’t give individual in need. I have gone to their site but haven’t figured out any schemes that suit me. Unesco is for educational development, but why doesn’t they give to individual in need? They are giving grants to our government to ensure study, but do they ever examine whether needy students are getting the aid? Our government is corrupted and we don’t get any kind of financial aid ever. So what’s the point of making financial aid when needy students can’t get it and the rich guys are getting it? I have sent a message to Unesco for help and they haven’t replied. It sounds like they are fake.

Anyways the reason behind my message is: as I need help I figured out im not going to get those so called financial aid or grants. I don’t even qualify for any scholarship; I had to work myself to earn my tuition fees of high school examination. As there are no part time jobs you can find here Bangladesh, I had to work for 8 hours/day 6 days a week. That is why I couldn’t do well in my examination. Anyways yesterday I came know about Mr. Warren buffet, he gave Mr. Bill gates around 34 billion dollars. I understand that we the poor in deadly need wont get any help from that. But could you guys at least show me a way so that I can find someone who will cosign me a student loan? So that I can continue my studies. How can I find address of Mr. Warren buffet or bill gates or Jackie Chan to ask help from them? If I can somehow reach them will they agree to help me? Please give me any solution where I can find their address.

Please give me any solution to my problem. This problem is bugging me so much that even I cannot sleep in night. How can you sleep when your future is not there?

Just let me know anyone out there who can cosign me a loan. I won’t default the loan I promise, I am an honest boy and whoever you are you can believe in me.

Thanks in advance. And sorry if I have made any inconvenience.
