Calling all who are opinionated, argumentative, convicted, holier-than-thou, snobbish, and smarty-two-shoes...

The question worthy of word war is as follows:

What is the correct expression?

Good news is "coming down the pike."

-OR-

Good news is "coming down the pipe."

My opinion is "pike," but it still sounds weird and i kind of stumble as i say that part of the expression...

Please pipe up. or is that "pike up"?!

I believe the origin of the saying came from the 1904 World`s Fair, held in St. Louis. There was a walkway known as The Pike. I can see how "New things" would come "down The Pike." There were supposed to be several interesting and new attractions on The Pike.

Anyone else?

I don`t have any knowledge of the origins of it, but I`ve more often heard it as "coming down the pike" than "coming down the pipe."

"pike" makes sense, as in "turnpike"

but "pipe" makes sense, as in "pipeline".

i`m still mixed on this one.

Well, when something`s going bad, I always say it`s "going down the tubes" or "going down the pipes" so maybe that`s why I like "pike" better.

I agree with pike.

I`ve noticed that some phrase distortions only appear in certain parts of the country. One of my favorites has to be one I`ve only heard in New York City.

Rich,
I think it all depends on the point you are trying to get accross... Either way they are correct, but like I said it all depends what point you are trying to get accross to your reader..

I like "pike" better, too.
Pipes transport many beneficial things... water, oil, natural gas, etc.
And also sewage.
Something, indeed, may be coming down the pipe. But, I`m not going to stick my eye up and see what it is.

I believe it`s pike. Isn`t a pike a kind of fish too?
Actually, I just found this link where they discuss it.

It seems maybe a pike is a waterway that logs came down as well.
