Hi!  I would love to start a recruiting firm as I love dealing with people and my current engineering job I find has a bit too much solo time.  I have an engineering background.

My first question would be - who do I need to network with to know who is hiring?  Do I start cold calling/emailing recruiters who work for large corporations advertising myself?

Where do I go to find out which companies have openings and pay 3rd part firms for finding them employees?

Thanks a lot.

There is a list of professional associations of recruiters at this address: http://www.searchfirm.com/associations/associations.asp. Find an association or two that fit your needs. They are usually great resources.

Your networking should start with the people you know...the companies you have worked with and the people you have worked with. Every good recruiter needs two things -- a network of hiring managers and a network of good quality candidates.

Good Luck!

Before you start cold calling companies, it would be best for you to build up a database of applicants.  It doesn't have to be big but just enough for you to have some people on hand to refer to the companies.

A great applicant screening process will help you build your business as the the companies will be happy to deal with you once they see the quality of your candidates.
