Hi,

 

I have heard waiters at high end restaurants can make over a 100k a year.  I know this is very tough work but is it possible to make 6 figures as a waiter in say places like LA, Chicago or NYC.

 

My friends say it is but I just can not imagine the money being that good.  I am sure these type of jobs are few and far between and take years of experience to land but seems like a pretty good path to success for someone who maybe did not attend college or something.

How much does an average waiter make at an okay diner?

It is true, I have worked in restaurants where servers and bartenders are making 6 figure salaries.  It is also true that those jobs are few and far between.  Those jobs are reserved for professional servers.  They have been in the biz for a while, are great with people and know food and service.

 

It is hard to say what an average server at an average restaurant would make, but if you are good even in dull towns, you should be able to pull in 50k.  If I had to guess I would say an average server makes closer to 28k-40k.  Remember to keep in mind, that might be in 5 shifts at 5-6 hours each?
