I'm in the research phase of starting my own business doing commercial and residential video surveillance company.

I am just curious with the state of the economy and those that are out there with brick and mortar stores, have you considered installing or have you installed any type of surveillance system.

What features would you look for most in a surveillance system.

There are many different surveillance systems available that I wouldn't even know where to begin. Are there any that you can suggest?

Hi,

I work in the surveillance field and have for many years.  There are many different types of systems.  Which one you install depends on what your protecting and what you want your system to do.

We have a building for instance that we are required by our permitting regs to have a minimum of 180 days playback capability.  Many systems can't meet that requirement.  At another facility I worked at, we had to have special camera housings to protect the cameras against corrosive fumes given off in the refinery.

Will your cameras be fixed or stationary?  Will they have nighttime capabilities?  Do you want to be able to zoom in on activity within view of the camera?

You also need to consider the number of cameras, verses the number of DVR ( digital video recording device ) units to install.  Most DVR units only have ports for 16 cameras.  If you have more than 16 cameras, you will need another DVR.  These units can range from $6,000 to $20,000 depending on capabilities of the DVR.

How will you connect your cameras to the monitoring station?  And, what type of monitoring software will you use?  This will determine the type of RAID unit you will mate up to your DVR.

Like the previous post states, there are very many options in a camera system.

There are a lot of factors to consider. What is the basic application you are looking for

and I will try to narrow it down for you.
