In California I see "wavers" on the corner directing traffic to new home developments.  I`ve also seen Liberty Tax use costumed wavers as well.  What are some opinions about this type of marketing??

Personally, if the waver is out there having a good time, (and I`ve totally seen some people out there "gettin down!") then I must admit, it puts a smile on my face.  If it`s an animal, my kids ALWAYS bring it to my attention, but having said all that, I can`t say my buying power was moved in a certain direction because of one.

I think if you’re having a big liquidation sale or something large like that and people probably don`t know where the store is located, then it`s a good idea. But for something like a home, no.  A furniture store by our work was closing and they had lots of  “wavers” out, I know they guy and he said that he never had so much business.

I agree with GrillCharmer, I always notice the guy in some strange out fit gettin down on the corner making as large of an attraction as possible, and yes I laugh too, heck I’ll even honk!

I’d also like to ad that if you have employees sitting around, we have one but she’ll be gone as of today, I would rather have her sitting on the side of a road holding up a sign instead of playing solitaire on our work computers.

I recall reading that `wavers` were outlawed in VA because they are a distraction and a menace to drivers, the article mentioned among other companies `Liberty Tax` as using them. I remember this because after reading that they were illegal in VA I`ve seen them on the streets (but not in front of their offices as it used to be), thought they are either ignoring the law or it is not being enforced yet.

Anyways did a quick search for it and found this commercial alert article that clearly states they are illegal in LA. I would suggest you make sure they are allowed in your city/State before spending money on something you may not be able to use.

Sometimes they are funny ... but yeah, they definitely don`t persuade me to buy.

ElidS... great info.

Yes... I get suckered into looking when I see a waver. I think it goes back to our hunter, gather and `hide from things with big teeth` days. The fact that something moved made me look.

That can be good if what I end up looking at is powerful enough to draw me into the store. (because that means pulling onto a side street, finding parking, and all that. ). But one thing is for sure... If I didn`t know the business was there... I do now. Even if I don`t decide to stop.

Although I can say I would rather have my employee doing that than playing games on the computer... what employer wouldn`t? At the same time, some employees would come unglued if they were all of  a sudden... forced to do it.

"Wavers" have never persuaded me to visit any retail location. I think it gives a "going out business" impression and that`s never likely to be a place I`d frequent.

CrockerTax,

If you have a retail tax service location, a waver is in my opinion, not the image you want to portray. I believe there are more creative and more effective ways to draw traffic to your location.
